I need a good screen recorder to record my desktop and Word for educational purposes. Any good recommendations? Prefer free one 'cause I don't want to waste any money on it.
OBS Studio is a popular choice for both recording and streaming, offering extensive customization and high-definition recording. For simpler recording needs, Loom, ScreenRec, and ShareX are also strong contenders.
OBS Studio and ShareX are both solid free options. OBS is great for more control and quality, while ShareX is super lightweight and easy to use. No watermarks on either.
Those two were already recommended by others. I'd just add Loom - it works well on both Mac and Windows, and it has free and paid plans.

This is a portable version; no installation is needed, and no license is needed. This is the best screen recorder I've ever used.
Do they both output to standard video formats? Can they also do occasional headshots? I am putting together a training video, 90% of which will just be capturing the computer screen and my narration. But I may want to lead into each segment with a short headshot video. Is that possible, too?
OBS Studio is your best bet - completely free, no watermarks, works great for desktop + specific windows. Super popular among content creators. Windows 10/11 has built-in Game Bar (Win+G) - perfect for quick recordings. ShareX is also solid if you need more editing features. I've used OBS for years and it handles everything you need for educational content. Just takes 5 minutes to set up.
