Hi Just getting into web design, and I know a little from before, but basically, it´s ... a desert. The first issue I encountered now was, making a layer via copy. I want to make a zoom in like this: "Could not make a selection, because the selected area was empty" Any help greatly appreciated, thanks P.S. I also want fancy stream lines, like on the Windows logo-background.
For the layer via copy issue, make sure to select the correct layer before copying to avoid any errors. To create a zoom effect, ensure there is content in the selected area to avoid the "empty" error message. Look into tutorials on creating zoom effects for more guidance. For stream lines like the Windows logo-background, consider using a graphics software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to create custom designs. Experiment with different tools and techniques to achieve the desired look.
Hi! Welcome to web design — it can definitely feel like a desert at first, but it gets much easier with practice! About your issue with "Could not make a selection, because the selected area was empty" — this usually means that the area you’re trying to copy or select doesn’t actually contain any pixels. Here are a few things to check: Make sure you have something visible selected on the layer you’re working on. If you’re trying to select an area, use the Marquee tool or Lasso tool and drag over the part you want. Check that you’re working on the correct layer — sometimes the active layer might be empty or hidden. If you want to zoom in on a part of the image, try first making a selection with the Marquee tool, then use Ctrl+J (Cmd+J on Mac) to duplicate the selection to a new layer. If the selection still comes up empty, double-check that your selection tool is set correctly (not on “Quick Mask” or something else). Regarding the fancy streamlines like on the Windows logo background, that effect usually involves creating smooth, flowing shapes with gradients and some blur or glow effects. You can achieve that by: Using the Pen tool to create curved paths and filling them with gradients. Applying Gaussian blur or motion blur for smoothness. Experimenting with layer blending modes like Overlay or Soft Light. Looking for tutorials on “flowing lines background” or “abstract wave background” to get step-by-step guides. If you want, I can help you with more specific steps or suggest tutorials! Keep experimenting — that’s the best way to learn!
The error Could not make a selection because the selected area was empty usually means your layer has no pixels where you're trying to select. Ensure you’re on the correct layer and that something is visible (not just transparency). For the zoom effect (zoom-in window), try duplicating your image layer, drawing a shape (such as a circle), and then using Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection. Resize or scale the masked layer to create the zoomed look. As for the fancy “stream lines” (like Windows logo background), look into radial gradients, blur, and motion blur tools—those effects are often built from simple shapes with blur filters applied.
