It used to be very common but if not done correctly, it could get you bannned from Google. Google has gotten smarter and smarter and can smell tricks. In my opinion, the rish outweighs the reward. Unfortunately , Google still controls the world and if you get the site or all sites banned, the domains are worthless.

PBN's are bad news. They are an old spammy tactic, like link wheels, that are more likely to see you have to burn your site and start again than have any long term gain.
