I tried to use AdWords to promote my own SEO software. I can mention some points:

1. It depends on region. For example, ads in the USA is too expensive for me, bit in Brazil price is reasonable.
   
2. There is sense to start ads campaign for short period of time (2 weeks for example) and then stop. Usually I do it when publish new version of the application.
   
3. Before start ads campaign you need to configure Google Analytics.
   
4. You need to be advanced AdWords user to configure ads company properly. So, be ready the first campaign won't be successful.
