WordPress alternatives?

Discussion in 'HTML & Website Design' started by Lizbeth Ross, May 18, 2020.

So I’ve been working closely with this web design Milton Keynes based agency I hired to make an e-commerce website. They specialise in WordPress, and the project is going smoothly so far. However, I can’t help but wonder if there are other platforms out there that are better for my needs than WordPress. Can I get opinions on some of the top alternatives for it? I just want to know. Thank you very much.

I don't know why you are searching for WordPress alternatives. Although there are so many e-commerce websites created with WordPress and Wocommerce. However, If you want to find an alternative to WordPress for an e-commerce website then you can check Shopify.

Wordpress holds the highest percentage of the market around 30-35% of websites on the internet are Wordpress driven, but of course there are so many other options. In fact there could be the option for going headless and static @Lizbeth Ross. This is something very new to the web using something we call JAMStack approach. There are now some amazing tools for static eCommerce sites, things such as Sanity, netlify etc. These will 100% improve Page performance and Security and hopefully user experience

I would normally say go with wordpress, but if you want something else i would say go with shopify. They would be my preferences in that order.

Without knowing your work specifications we can't possibly comment.

Are you expecting them to maintain the content or does it need to be something you can run?
Do you have solid computer skills or is the idea of managing the site keeping you awake at night?
Do you have 3 products with a few variations or 300 products?
What payment gateway integrations do you need?
What about integrating with your accounting platform?
What quirks does your business have that will need to be built into the solution?
Are you selling physical goods or digital?
Do you ship internationally or just locally?

There are loads of alternatives, some won't be worth assessing, others might be.

If you've given the contract to a company I'm wondering what they've done to make you lose faith?
You might be better taking your business elsewhere, but Wordpress might still be the answer.

My personal opinion, if I hire someone for any project, and they suggest me to use wordpress, I will fire them immediately without a second thought.

90% people who are using wordpress, they know nothing about web development.
Most of them only know how to click buttons in cpanel's wordpress auto installer and in wordpress admin panel to install themes and plugins.

Wordpress itself has so many issues. Its the favourite platform of hackers, to hack.
There are companies whose primary work is fixing hacked wordpress websites.
When you will mention this to your developer, their response will be "We have taken measures to make sure things are safe", which means they have installed some other third party plugin from wordpress admin panel, by clicking another button! LOL

Other than this, there are speed issues with wordpress, there are issues with HTML that wordpress throws out etc etc.

As a newbe, you might have picked wordpress for now, but this is definitely "not" the way going ahead.

That's a bit of a crazy statement, come on...some of the biggest sites online are using Wordpress to drive multi million pound companies and this is tterrible, terrible advice to someone looking to build a website. Lets go through this one by one.

90% of people are using Wordpress, they know nothing about web development - Not sure where you got this stat from. They don't need to, this is Wordpress's purpose, Wordpress is free, easy to setup. Best option here would be to get advice from a Developer, not sack them. Advice on launching a Wordpress Store and keeping it safe is always best and this is what I would advise to anyone. I'll get to your hacking point in a mo. cPanel auto installers are fine, they do the job for people and what is wrong with that?

Wordpress itself has so many issues. Its the favourite platform of hackers, to hack. - Any website can be hacked, anysite. Huge sites are hacked every day, Sony, Microsoft etc. Security costs are huge for large companies spending thousands a day, it's one of the hardest things to do. However you are soooo wrong about Wordpress security, Wordpress is one of the safest systems there is at a core level. They introduce updates weekly, the problems occur when people start adding vulnerable, unsupported or unmaintained plugins that leave holes for SQL injection. Again hire a developer here for advice, don't sack them, it's the worst idea in the world. iTheme Security is a recommended plugin, it has nearly 1 Million users and as a developer with nearly 20 years experience I've seen 2 sites hacked when using with Wordpress. If you're so concerned about security possible look at going Headless and go down the JAMStack route where you don't have the database aspect of the site.

There are companies whose primary work is fixing hacked wordpress websites. - Yes, and it's a positive thing not a negative thing

When you will mention this to your developer, their response will be "We have taken measures to make sure things are safe", which means they have installed some other third party plugin from wordpress admin panel, by clicking another button! LOL - As above in the security part, Wordpress is safe as houses but there are also so many other measures such as SALTS and changing database entries etc. Again advice from a developer.

Other than this, there are speed issues with wordpress, there are issues with HTML that wordpress throws out etc etc. - Agree but it's nothing that cannot be resolved with a developer. The Smashing magazine, website before they went JAMStack had their site performance up to 100% and the site was pure in terms of its HTML. Not an excuse to use Wordpress, it can be built on anything in terms of front end tech.

As a newbe, you might have picked wordpress for now, but this is definitely "not" the way going ahead - TechCrunch, Sony, Bloomberg...these are all sites that use Wordpress. As of Jan 2019 there are 1,518,207,412 websites on the internet and around 75 million of those are Wordpress Driven.

    Closing thoughts...
Use Wordpress if you feel like it's for you, it's a fantastic system very extendible and has amazing features out of the box. However be concious surrounding securing your website first. Get guidance from an experienced developer and make sure this is your priority. When it comes to speed and performance, again get advice and see what can be done. This totally depends if you're getting an off the shelf theme or if you're looking to have a site built from the ground up. If you're not experienced with websites and website development always seek advice. If a developer mentions Wordpress, don't sack them immediately Why? People like Chris Coyier, Brad Frost, Lea Verou may advise to use Wordpress, some of the biggest names in the industry, in fact own sites on Wordpress. For me it depends on requirements, specification, future vision. A discussion surrounding this would allow us to make a decision on platform.

Sony, boomberg, are they using those same plugins that are available on the web? Or did their developers took the core code and developed their own plugins for their requirements?

    These are 2 different things.
A person installing third party plugins all over a core code,
and another company getting plugins developed inhouse.

I am 100% sure that developer of this thread starter is "not" developing an ecommerce plugin of their own for him.
They are installing one of the third party plugins for him.

Getting hacked is something positive? Since when?
Something very new I ound today... LOL
By the way, changing salts only prevents password decryption "which are already stolen". Its only one step to make things harder for the thief "who already has your database"
It does not prevents hacking at all.
What database entry can you change to prevent hacking? Kindly let me know this LOL

From this forum itself. Take a look at some of the WP threads this forum itself has. People asking,
"I am working for a client, and my hosting's auto installer is not installing wp properly, please help."
Aren't these people screwing their clients? Clients like the original thread starter of this thread?

Simply because 3-4 large companies picked up a free script from the web and "modified" it heavily for their "own inhouse use", does not means that the original code itself is very good.
It means that original code was not good and a lot of modifications were needed to make it suitable for "use"

WP releases weekly security updates, and this is good?
Doesn't this means that there are lots of bugs in the script which need so frequent updating?
Its like you bought a new Car, and you need maintainance "every week" for your new car... And you think this is good!!!

Hey @JEET do explain where I said hacking was a positive thing? I mentioned nothing of the sort.

In your opening statement you said you would immediately sack someone who recommended Wordpress. Are you a developer yourself?

Bloomberg and TechCrunch use a mix of both in house Developed Plugins and Off The Shelf.

I have no idea what you mean on the SALTS comment, I think you're getting confused

    as for this one...

From this forum itself. Take a look at some of the WP threads this forum itself has. People asking,
"I am working for a client, and my hosting's auto installer is not installing wp properly, please help."
Aren't these people screwing their clients? Clients like the original thread starter of this thread?

You may or many not be aware that there are different levels of developers. Some may opt to use a Wizard so may not. I presume those opting to use a wizard may be of a lower level and are asking for help. In that case help don't abuse, the forums are here to support people not twist, moan and bitch that they are wrong to use it. This is also not a fault of wordpress it is simply a way of getting Wordpress up and running.

    As for this comment...

Simply because 3-4 large companies picked up a free script from the web and "modified" it heavily for their "own inhouse use", does not means that the original code itself is very good.

I just took a deep breathe. The guys over at Wordpress are a fantastic knowledgeable team who have very high standards. Yes, some areas of WP may not be absolutely on point and there is room for improvement as there always is but there is absolutely no reason to say Wordpress uses bad code. I have no idea where you get that from.

WP releases weekly security updates, and this is good?
Yes, its good just like hundreds and thousands of other software houses do.

Doesn't this means that there are lots of bugs in the script which need so frequent updating?
No. It could be enhancements to performance, security factors and deeper improvements to functionality

For some reason, you think that thousands of websites using same platform, all getting hacked, is something good.
I will honestly never understand this point of yours...

    You wrote:

I am not confused at all. I think you don't know what salts are in terms of web development.
In basic terms, salts are strings used to hash encrypt a password before storing the password in database.
So if a database is stolen or compromised, then hackers could not decrypt passwords "easily".
Database is still stolen, website hacked.

    Nobody is bitching or twisting.
When a person comes to a forum saying that "he has a client", and he (not client, he himself) "cannot do" a manual install of wp, then I definitely feel sorry for the poor client who chose this guy as his web designer.

You talk about security to a wp user, he says I installed some plugin.
You talk about caching to a wp user, he says I installed some plugin.
Then they come and say, my site got hacked, my site is not loading fast, my site is failing speed test.

They don't even know what those plugins are, or what they do, and they are taking clients.
You don't feel sorry for these "clients' who paid these people for screwing them?

Which thousands of softwares are you talking about?
Anti-virus softwares? They are not releasing software bug fixes. They are sending virus definitions of new viruses ones found.
Or updating the software in backend when a new "version" is released.

I cannot even imagine a web script that needs weekly updates.
    Updates to what?
Is wp releasing a new version each week?
Which code in wp needs weekly maintainance?

I found that CMSpro is a good option to start. I didn't use it very much, but it has some flexibility. The only downside is that you have to develop your own plugins/addons. It has some basic addons like blog, store, portfolio, etc. But other than that, you have to develop them yourself.

I'd say Joomla or Drupal for powerful back-end features + plugin support.

You may also consider Wix for a basic e-commerce site.

I’m excited to see which of the above online publishing platforms become successful in the next few years, and which ones will fall out of fashion.

    Things are changing fast!
