    Review 13pp.co.uk please

    Hi,
    Please review https://13pp.co.uk/
    (Power Press official website, wordpress alternative)

    Is the website looking fine on your mobile phone browsers?
    I have checked on safari iPhone 6, need opinions about others.

    @deathshadow
    What improvements can be done to HTML output?

    Thanks

    It looks really cramped and busy on my screen - and way too wide to read comfortably. Don't be afraid of white space. The menu moves when you mouseover. Get someone to do you a proper logo.
    upload_2020-4-6_11-37-8.png

    It's definitely light on coding, but the css should still be in a separate file.

    Because it'll be brand new to your users I'd have a few demo sites for them to visit so that they can see that their new site can be beautiful.

    https://13pp.co.uk/post/WhatIsWrongWithWordpress
    I'd start this page with a simple table of features that you have and tick those that WordPress also has.

    Why all the <br> after each sentence. You've gone from not enough white space to so much the page looks broken.
    upload_2020-4-6_11-41-38.png

    In the "a community of novice developers" section you slam WordPress but don't make any claims that your team is any better.

    https://13pp.co.uk/post/HowToCodePowerPressPlugin - your code snippets are displayed differently each time.

    I don't recommend asking for phone numbers in registration forms unless you explicitly state why you want them.

    Oh, and you asked about mobile

    I'm stunned

    upload_2020-4-6_11-50-41.png

    I did not expect that side bar to pass google's mobile test : https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly?url=https://13pp.co.uk/

    Add line-height:1.5 em; or something like that to make your text more readable.

    Instead of making your text bold on hover in the menu, change its color instead (from blue to red for instance). Increase the menu's height too.

    And yes, you need a new/different logo.

    @sarahk
    Done some changes, removed extra line breaks too.
    Thanks for the detailed input! Deeply appreciated :)

    @qwikad.com
    Thanks for the feedback :)
    Did those changes you suggested.

    Logo is a problem, will have to hire someone.

    Hopefully you'll get a better layout done one day, but it's amazing how much better it looks with those little changes. Well done!

    First thing I'd suggest is setting a max-width. The long lines are a bit hard to follow at 1440p, much less 4k/2160p.

    Next I'd add more whitespace around things, it feels all kinda tosssed in there as things are too close together to make separate sections apparent. ESPECIALLY that menu. It's also not helping that the header image and associated text spacing feels misaligned, particularly since it's not lining up to the content below it.

    Also it's copyright to WHO? Much less copyright copyright? Use the symbol OR the word, not both.

    As to the markup, it's got the outdated HTML 4 style meta where the modern charset declaration should be, a lack of a lang declaration, a description meta that's utter trash since it repeats the name, static style in the markup where it has ZERO huffing business being, a complete lack of media targets, blocking scripts in the head, What appears to be JavaScript on a page that doesn't seem to be doing anything warranting the presence of scripting, target="_blank" shoving new windows down the user's gullet whether they want them or not (there's a REASON it was deprecated in 4 Strict, screw HTML 5 putting it back), double-breaks doing <p>'s job, failure to close <li> in a manner that could lead to render issues (there's a reason closures stopped being optional in HTML 4 strict OR tranny), paragraphs around non-paragraph items, gibberish use of numbered headings such as the H1 halfway down the page, broken/incomplete forms, bold tags doing strong's job, clearing DIV as if this were 2003 using style="" as if this was 1997, absolute URI's for nothihng, data- stuff for christmas only knows what since again, I see NOTHING being done to warrant the use of JavaScript...

    The "Engrish moist goodry me love you long time" not helping matters.

    It's got problems. Hence the 13k of markup doing around 10k's job and the utter failure at the most basic of semantics and accessibility. The general lack of logical document structure through the misuse of paragraph, lack of lists on things that should be lists, and gibberish heading orders -- much less the missing headings between sections -- really make it an accessibility disaster.

    ... and as much as I protest it, moving forward it should probably have the derpy HTML 5 tags in there.

    Hence if I were writing the same page, the markup would be more along the lines of this:

    <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en"><head><meta charset="utf-8">
    <meta
    	name="viewport"
    	content="width=device-width,height=device-height,initial-scale=1"
    >

    	content="The modern wordpress replacement!"

    			Wordpress has become the choice of freelance designers, mostly novice webmasters who do not know the first thing about HTML or coding. They simply found a pre-made free solution, which their hosting provider installed for them, and they simply started adding posts from their admin panel, without any consideration about the HTML they are spitting out, or the torture they are putting their server through.

    Code (markup):
    Pay particular attention to the use of H1, H2 and HR, the site title/name being the H1 (image replacement that if you want the derpy image), removal of paragraphs from the form and footer since they're not enough content to be GRAMMATICAL paragraphs, removal of double-breaks in what should be paragraphs, addition of an actual list to the menu, addition of hooks to allow the creation of a mobile / hamburger menu... and I even did it the "HTML 5" way as much as I hate it.

    ... and remember, HR means a change in topic, NOT "draw a line across the screen". Generally it should be used when something is NOT part of the section started by a numbered heading before it.

    I also removed all the presentational images that have ZERO business in the markup, load them from CSS where they belong! Some span could/should probably be added to the social menu text if desired to turn that into a proper iconograph, instead of just dumping the text in there willy-nilly. Likewise I fixed most of the URI's removing the "absolutes for nothing" as well as properly escaping all the href GETdata.

    See what I'm saying?

    Thanks @deathshadow for the help.
    I have removed multiple <h1> from homepage.

    The javascript is there because of rating system in blog posts. That is mainly where its used.
    There are no blog posts on the site yet, that is why you did not see any use of it.

    Absolute URLS in images etc are needed because deep subcategory pages can be created.
    so, if the user is here:
    13pp.co/uk/post/tutorial/plugin/page.htm
    and the images are here:
    13pp.co.uk/images/logo.png
    then linking to image using a "../../../" might result in errors.
    This is why I linked to them using a absolute URL in the theme.

    target="_blank" is for external websites only, will open a new tab.

    The multiple <br /> inside <p> are my fault, like the non-closing <li> are.
    I did that when I was writing the content.

    From accessibility point of view, I got this tested with screen readers also, the entire CMS is coded keeping that in mind.
    Accessibility will not be an issue I think.
    I hope that was what you meant by accessibility... Or did you meant different devices?

    Thanks for the HTML markup. I will code up a theme with the HTML you have posted.

    Many thanks for the help :)

    So ROOT the request.
    /images/logo.png

    The domain is not needed. A single forward slash puts you at root of the same domain you're already on. Hence you don't need the domain or ../

    Which STILL breaks normal forward/back navigation, creates tabs/windows the user might not even want, and again violates the entire reason it was removed from HTML 22 years ago, and only returned in HTML 5 for the same reasons EMBED is in 5; the WhatWG were morons unqualified to create 4 Strct's successor. (see the defunct HGROUP for more proof of this)

    The user wants to open in a new tab they can middle-click or ctrl-click. Don't remove the choice from those of us where it's just going to piss us off or make things harder to use! Though I'm often disturbed how many people don't know you can push the mouse wheel straight in to get a middle click

    The multiple <br /> inside <p> are my fault, like the non-closing <li> are.
    I did that when I was writing the content.

    REAL screen readers like JAWS, or pretend bullshit that's useless to the blind like the one crApple has built in or the alleged plugins for FF?

    Though a braille reader would be a good test, problem is they cost as much as many computers.

    But such accessibility is about more than "can it read it", since we also have to talk navigation. How was non-mouse arrows-only functionality? Remeember "pointing" devices are useless to the blind and for a lot of the physically challenged who use various types of joysticks and button clusters instead. That's why I'm such a stickler for proper use of numbered headings as not only does it let search make sense of the page's content organization, it also allows header menus to be built. It's a shame the last browser to have header navigation it built-in was Opera 12, so now we can't test how it works in non-visual UA's. Just one of the many "f*** our own fans" that Opera pulled when they haphazardly slopped their logo onto Chromium. Hell with some of the features coming in Chromium based desktop Edge, that looks to be more "Opera" than Opera is right now!

    If I have time after breakfast I may do the same just for laughs, with some... redesigns of certain things to fix other issues.

    Even so you've got four separate scripts AND static scripting in the markup, which from what you describe should be the job of ONE script right before </body>.

    ... and here's the CSS to go with it, there were minor changes to the markup so be sure to review all of it.

    I gave it my current mobile menu method, and a 100% flex-height for pages that are smaller in content than the display. Laughably the mobile menu/search CSS is as big as the rest of the page.

    I also moved the search as that top-right area seemed pretty damned empty.

    @deathshadow many thanks once again for the theme :) Deeply appreciated! :)

    The website is tested with Jaws14, with Jaws17, and also with NVDA.
    I got a friend who is almost blind, like 95% blind, uses Jaws on windows7.
    He tests all my websites for accessibility before I put them online.

    Every little thing on the website can be accessed by screen reader using visitors.
    This also includes javascript functionality wherever its used, like in rating system, share buttons, and the BB code editor (when making blog posts)

    Entire website can be worked without touching a mouse.

    I have to do something about the header image though.

    Many thanks for the help :) :) :)

    Hi @JEET
    Why don't you get a better design for your website? I don't think any of the above told you this. But its really not looking good though. Your logo is not professional and website too.
    I don't want to offend you. But being an IT Consultant I'd suggest you to get a new design for your website. If you need help you can let me know.

    Regards
    Sushil
