(Update - Can now choose between dofollow or nofollow).

Visitors to the site can -

• Search / Browse via Regions / Counties within categories.
• Share Business detail profile pages on 'Facebook & Twitter'.
• Contact businesses via built in email form.
• Recommend via message form.
• Rate / Comment on Business services used.

Suggesting A UK Business -

• Can be done via a 'Guest' submission or as a 'Member'.
• Business listings can be edited 24/7 via unique code or 'User Area' if registered.
• Free & Paid options available.
• On admin approval.
• Fast review times (generally same day).

We have spent some time on seo and will continue to do so. All content added gets updated via sitemaps (Google, Bing). Site is still a slight work-in-progress for some design / functions.

Site uses Google adsense & Google ads (where funds allow).

(Update - Site is now showing up on 1st & 2nd page results in Google using a combination of home page title keywords, Has over 200+ indexed pages. We have also installed a script to show Daily, weekly & Monthly unique visitor counts).

What good is a directory with a nofollow attribute?

It's a grey area with Google and other search engines, Some say don't, some say do and as a backlink does not hold as much weight these days with recent updates we have concentrated on listing profile page (They Get Crawled & Indexed).

Back links do matter a lot. Google is definitely giving importance to back links in deciding authority of the website.

Do a google search for "webmaster forum"
You will find a website "V7n". Its a dead forum, nobody uses it anymore, probably not even the admins.
But its there in first page of results.
And I know for a fact that it has huge number of back links pointing to it.
They ran a SEO contest long ago, 10 years back, lots of people linked to it.
They also bought lots of links after that.
Its still ranking on page one, even though nobody is using it anymore...

I do agree that even nofollow links are getting crawled and indexed, but not sure if they actually count as back links to decide authority.

Thank you for your detailed reply, Yes i understand backlinks do matter but so many different views & opinions. We have set all outbound links to 'NoFollow' (can be changed on request) and i think i remember Google saying that they 'Mostly Don't Follow The - NoFollow Link Attribute'.

Us using the 'NoFollow Link Attribute' is just a safe way at the moment.

Thank you - Have now edited the site so that businesses that want to suggest a uk business and do decided to list a business URL can now choose 'Dofollow' or 'Nofollow' on all submission types.

Regarding ‘v7n’? Really! Not been on there for a while, to be honest I got a infraction for something silly and gave up with them, just tried to visit their forum and it gives errors. Sure that site was buzzing a few years ago, how things change.
