Are Graphics Cards Replaceable in Laptops?

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by davilama2682, Nov 23, 2019.

    Hi.
I managed to overheat the graphics card on my laptop. Someone called me when I turned it on - and I forgot I left it on the bed. The system still works - it was a lower-end laptop when I purchased it. Already over 1 year old from time of purchase. Are graphic cards something that can be repaired/replaced on laptop? Or, laptops are usually integrated circuits - I should get whole new one? Thanks.

If it was a lower-end laptop it likely has integrated graphics which is attached to the motherboard. You couldn't just replace the graphics card.

In most cases, it isn't possible to upgrade a laptop's graphics card. ... The vast majority of laptops have integrated graphics, which means the GPU (graphics processing unit) is permanently attached to the motherboard, and not removable as it is in a desktop PC.

It was advisable to indicate the model / brand of the laptop in order to answer you.
And so, if the video card is integrated -> replace the processor
If discrete -> replacing the motherboard or re-soldering the video chip (undesirable)

Doing any soldering on a motherboard is a very tricky task. You'd be better off searching for computer repair shops and getting some price quotes and reviews of if you intend on saving the laptop

The laptop has really good hard drive space and 6GB RAM. It served me well and turned on fast for me. I have already gotten a newer laptop. But, I would like to salvage the damaged one....I could make it strictly a computer for work projects and not my personal use. If I recycle it - I get nothing out of it. I could still access the system via HDMI hooked up to an external display. But, that defeats the purpose of a laptop if it has to stay tethered to a TV. I have already transferred my documents to a thumb drive so its collecting dust. There is some nostalgia because I got my first college degree using it. But, I want to keep it plainly for its continued utility.

From googling it looks like it uses onboard graphics, can't tell if it's combined within the CPU
