It does works. I have seen even smaller articles ranking. But it all depends on niche and what the searcher is looking for.

your content should be unique and user-friendly.. doesn't matter if its 500 words or more. But it also depends on your niche, what type of niche you are working on. For example, if its e-commerce site then 500 words for each product but if its services site then you need to write more than 4k words.

Yes, it works. Because no one wants to read long articles or blog. People just need to get their answer if they made any search for any query.
The second thing is there how interesting and attractive your content is (quality of the content). If it is a guide about something then 400-600 words not enough and depend upon the topic you are writing on.
Just write the quality content and write for the users, not for the Search Engines, make it simple and attractive.

more than the number of words you should be focusing on the quality of the content, how it is laid out, the font, images or videos present, and so on.

As far as the content is high quality and engaging (after you have optimised the page and checked the competition), I wouldn't worry too much about length.

Sometimes a short article can trigger a longer discussion – and sometimes users, Some writers naturally work with a shorter style, while others go on and on.

Short answer- for most niches is NO.

It's been proven many times from testing/data that longer articles rank higher. The best way to determine what that "ballpark number" would be, is to google the keyword you plan to write about and get the average article length of say the top 5-10 ranking pages (your future competitors). If the average is say 2000 words, you won't have a chance of ranking (1st page) with 400-500 words. Unless you magically found a keyword with all SEO noobs (poor on-page SEO, no backlinks, etc) ranking first page (not likely). Sometimes you may find that short articles rank well and are the norm for that niche/keyword.

You also have to remember there's much more to ranking than content alone. Like "bounce rate" and "time on site/dwell time". Shorter articles will negatively impact these metrics, as it doesn't take long to read (time on site), etc. Lower the bounce rate and longer the time on site- the better (for ranking). You also need enough content to create your headings (h2/h3), keywords, pics, etc.

Don't "assume" people don't want to read longer articles. If you write great engaging content and people are really interested in the topic, they'll stick around and read it. You want them to stay on your site as long as possible and not need to go to another site for more info on that topic.

I think It depends on your short article. If your article has any concept or plan or well meaning then it will work.

If it's carry quality then quantity is not a fact as well as 250-350 is enough for that.

    Quality over quantity.

Don’t worry too much about the length of your content, as long as it is GOOD, SEO friendly content.

Yoast SEO is a great plugin for Wordpress to help you optimise your blog posts and it can tell you if your content is good or bad.

If you Post them appropriately in different sites then it works well. As well as it must be meaningful to google.

I think today's time long articles work more than short articles. And if we add images and videos in the content it'll be more effective. And Content quality is also most important factor in getting rank in Search Engine.

It depends on the keywords you are targeting, your domain authority and originality of the content.

Google pushes long form of content at top as It wants Its users to land up on pages where they can get all information to the topic they are searching. Otherwise why will you use Google to search anything and how will they maintain their dominance in search industry

If Seth Godin writes a small post, Google will love it because he is an authority but if some one with low domain authority writes something, It will get buried down. So instead of obsessing about the length of the content, think about the users and do justice to the topic. Google as well as other search engines will love you.
