    There are opportunities of having backlinks everywhere, all you just need to do is... stay within the ecosystem of your niche. You can depend on Google for finding these opportunities. You need to make searches like...

    "Your Niche" guest posts
    "Your Niche" submit guest post [There are several other combinations to find guest post sites]
    "Your Niche" question answers
    "Your Niche" forums
    "Your Niche" type of website (like press release, directory, classified, social bookmark, pdf sharing, and what not)

    Besides this, as other people said... use backlink tools to get the competitors backlink, many sites list the sites where you can submit your guest post, top-level general social media sites that include Facebook, Twitter, etc.
