Hello, I am thinking of buying an expired domain, but I am not sure if its a good idea. How can I know it was not a spam website or something similar that will hurt its performance?

Use sites like Majestic or Ahrefs to look at backlinks for the domain and see if they are good/real backlinks, or if they're spammy/junk backlinks. Then, use the archive.org website to look at what used to be on the domain. Was it parked? Good/quality content?..etc... By looking at all of this you should be able to get an idea if the expired domain is "good" or "bad"

A quick place to start is to check with the website has a http tag as these are usually more secure. A lot of dodgy websites might not bother with this security certification process, so this could be a red flag. Of course there are more checks to do but this is just a simple thing to look for right at the beginning

It is a good idea to buy an expired domain but before buying you have to check domain age, spam score and backlinks. If you find that the domain has spam score high or bad backlinks then you should not buy such types of domain. In this situation, you should prefer a new domain.

    Thanks

Check the number of backlinks, DA, PA. Are the backlinks relevant to the domain name?

Then go to Wayback machine archive (web.archive.org) and check if it was a high authority website with quality content.

Before you purchase look for a negative impact by doing the following:

    • Google search the domain to find if there is a presence and what type.
    • Check web.archive.org to see if there's been a web site and what type of site and how long.
    • Use a couple online Spam/Link checkers to see what it returns.
If the domain has a negative impact it's probably a better idea to just pass it by and move on unless the negative impact carries very little weight.

Buying Expired domains is a good idea. To check the credibility you can look it up on Moz for PA and DA. You can find the number of backlinks on semrush or ubersuggest. Check if the backlinks are genuine. Also, check if the Ip on which domain is hosted is blacklisted or not.

Yes. You can purchase an expired domain and it will be more easier for you to rank your site than purchasing a fresh domain because this domain is already comes with history. However You will have to check the domain history to make sure it's not used for spamming. this guide will help you to find expired domains on your own and determine if your domain is worth the time.

If the expired domain is listed in blacklist in search engines than it is of no use in buying.

There is no problem in buying a expired domain until it is easy to remember and have good links. If everything is fine. Just for it.
