I'd call it gray hat if executed properly, but definitely black hat according to Google guidelines.

It used to be very common but if not done correctly, it could get you bannned from Google. Google has gotten smarter and smarter and can smell tricks. In my opinion, the rish outweighs the reward. Unfortunately
, Google still controls the world and if you get the site or all sites banned, the domains are worthless.

It is definitely against Google's guidelines. They don't want you to rank for free right? Why would they when they make over $40 billion from ad revenue.
    Don't go there @seoninja121, don't mess with a giant.

PBN's have been penalized by Google in the past.

PBN's are bad news. They are an old spammy tactic, like link wheels, that are more likely to see you have to burn your site and start again than have any long term gain. Even affiliate marketing guru Spencer Hawes had 10 sites trashed over PBNs and if he can't hide that footprint, neither can you. Please read this: Avoid PBN Services

I don't think about Push Button Numbers - I just push the buttons.

Yes, it is a black hat SEO technique and also, those sites don't contain proper content and appear similar to each other.

Google selectively penalizes PBN and the money you looses with buying links on them will be heavy.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a network of authoritative websites used to build links to your money website(s) for the purpose of ranking higher in the Google search engine. A money website is the website you intend on ranking i.e. the one that actually makes money.
