Quality backlinks always matter for Google. The techniques we used to build the backlinks for the website in 2 or 3 years back are not worthful for now. Because, Google prefers natural links more than spammy or unnatural links or from the spammy website.
So, again here content is the king because if your write the quality content to your website and share quality and trending posts on your blog than definitely, you will earn the natural links.

I think backlinks will always be important, especially for the higher competition keywords but Google have made a whole bunch of changes over the past 18 month or so. I have a few pages ranking now for low comp keywords that have no backlinks built to them so I am looking to expand into that kind of area to try and move away from living in fear of the next Google update and losing everything.

If you have a large website I mean 100,000+ pages it can only perform if you have a good number of links, I've observed that for these larger sites the amount of traffic seems to be correlated to the number of referring domains they have. It seems less important if you operate in niche with smaller sites.
