Do you interested in script? It is hard using CMS like Joomla, Wordpress to make a social network. There's a lot of social media script on Codecanyon

The disadvantage with codecanyon is there are contributors who could not maintain an up to date versions of their own script. If PHP versions are increasing, some scripts would no longer work and some small time contributors does not bother to update.

Joomla works out great when building website on shared hosting. If traffic is going to be high then you will need a VPS.

Drupal is excellent for social networking, i.e. users share blogs, comments, images, articles, forum posts, etc. + you can build custom templates for the profile pages. Boonex Dolphin is an example of a paid CMS that offers a complete social networking site out of the box. BuddyPress is also highly recommended.

Boonex is good but having trialled the software in the past; I would advise having a developer on hand and also someone to do graphics and template edits. I agree with @scriptbox that BuddyPress is highly recommended. What is your aim for this Social Network?
