How to optimize your LinkedIn profile to gear it up for lead generation

It's no secret that LinkedIn is THE go-to social media channel for B2B lead generation.

Yes, Twitter and Facebook are still important but if you're serious about lead gen, you need to be on LinkedIn.

So, I just wanted to share a few tips on how to optimize your LinkedIn profile because I think I've cracked it. I'm getting good leads.

Your LinkedIn profile is a web page not a CV

Your LinkedIn profile is not an online resume. It's an opportunity for you to connect directly with your audience and talk about how you can help them. Too many people make their LinkedIn profile look like their CV. This is boring and won't generate leads.

    Professional profile picture

A professional profile picture that represents your industry is important. This is critical for your LinkedIn success! Adding a profile photo could result in 14 times more profile views. Consider booking a local photographer for a professional headshot. You'll come across much better than in a snap your other half took.

You should look smart and approachable. Don't post leisure pictures. No dogs, no kids, no gimmicks!

Wanna make sure you've picked the right photo? Upload your images to Photofeeler and get unbiased feedback from 40 total strangers. Each photo is ranked for three traits. The Business profile will show your ratings for how likeable, competent and influential you appear to others.

Add a cool LinkedIn background photo

While you can't afford to play with your profile photo too much, the background banner is where you can let your creative side out. Take care to create the right impression. Symbolic imagery, patterns, inspirational quotes, landscapes are all OK as long as they sit well with your personality and the image you want to project.

LinkedIn Headline - sell your expertise

When people use LinkedIn's search, the words you use as your headline are the most prominent after your name. Use this precious real estate wisely.

    Make use of keyword optimization

When you think of ways how to optimize your LinkedIn profile, keep keywords in mind. Make a list of keywords you want to be found for, and then weave these into your summary text. Include relevant words such as expert, specialist or any other generic term for your industry that someone might use as one of their search words. Your LinkedIn profile is a web page and all things that Google apply to regular web pages will apply to your LinkedIn profile. If you want it to rank high, make sure you have enough keywords.

Good profile - this is the first thing your visitors will see. Make sure that you upload a good professional image, also the description should be both honest and interesting
    Join relevant groups
    - participate, comment give your opinion
Connect - but do NOT spam. Follow up with a short message and remember that on average it takes 5 approaches before receiving a respond, so don't give up :)
Post relevant news and updates and statistics related to your industry - if your product is water filters then update your LinkedIn with related news, for instance 'drinking water quality' in specific country.

All the above-mentioned tips are great, but will be of little use, unless you have quite a few connections. Otherwise LinkedIn won’t even show your lead’s profile.
