What could be some pros and cons of a VPS? Well, for one thing, you can often resell it. Another advantage is in the fact that it can power a larger website or make a smaller website work better.

If you take out a VPS the downside is that you are doing all of the configuration and tuning and patching and administration and backups and restores, paying for software licenses... The list goes on.

Two-thirds of customers who move from shared hosting do so as the shared hosting does allow the amount of resources that customer needs on their entry level plans.
More than half of those who do this upgrade have churned (moved on) from their host in the next 3 months because of the downsides listed above. They simply want to run their business not do all of those things.
There is a better solution. An ElasticSites host will provide you with a shared hosting account that can scale, so you decide whether you want 1,2,4,8 or even more CPU cores, as long as you are willing to pay.
And as it's based on a shared hosting model, all of the management is done for you!

One major downside of shared hosting is that it's highly vulnerable to getting hacked. If 1 website out of the 2,000 websites hosted on a shared server get hacked, the other 1,999 are also at risk because the hacker now has access to the server and if he successfully runs a couple of exploits, he can gain root access in minutes. A VPS rules out this problem completely.

Nothing is secure. Its your preference. VPS needs administration knowledge. also VPS is normally cost much more than standard shared hosting.

There are some that cost $3 per month for an unmanaged 1 GB RAM VPS.

A VPS for 3€ can not be better than a reseller account. A VPS for 3 or 5 € is OK for personal projects or get experience in VPS admin, but very difficult will be better than a (good) reseller account imo.

As the foundation is the most important element of a house, an essential step in creating a successful website is choosing the right web hosting service. It is up to your preference where you want to live. If you prefer living in a shared space with roommates, then shared hosting is ideal for you. Shared hosting has numerous advantages: it’s easy to maintain (especially if you have smaller website), it’s cost-effective, you don’t need to maintain your website, you can install different softwares and, if necessary, you can ask for extra storage space. However, your resources and customer support will be limited, other websites hosted on the shared server could affect performance of your own page, and you could have eventual security issues. If, on the other hand, you prefer living in your own flat, VPS is a good choice for you: you can arrange and configure everything in your big space, according to your wishes and taste, you can upgrade and/or downgrade whenever you want, you can have a considerable and reliable customer support at any time, and your security levels will be higher. However, this service is pretty costly. Another downside is that you have to be careful when choosing a system administrator to take care of your server.
In conclusion, there is no ideal solution. VPS asks for knowledge and costs more, while shared hosting is much more cost-effective but it can be risky security-wise. It is up to you to choose according to your taste and your preference.

VPS is very nice as it doesn't adhere to the restrictive nature of shared hosting servers. On shared hosting, you're going to be told what software you can and cannot operate.

On the VPS, you'll be the one calling the shots.

As has been pointed out in this thread there are some potential security issues with shared hosting. VPS is safer as you don't have to share the server with others. In the beginning many people start with shared hosting. It's cheap and convenient. When their website traffic grows they move on to VPS. A piece of advice in this case is to look that the provider of shared hosting has an upgrade option to VPS. Also look at the pricing and technical specifications. Before choosing a provider of hosting you should read the reviews that are out there. If there are many people who complain about bad customer service, you will sooner or later be in the same position as them. There is always a possibility that some issues arise with the hosting, but when such situations arise you should get good customer service and not bad.

If you need to collect users information (payments, adress, etc...) we always recommend a VPS. It's in a shared environment but much much more safe then a shared server with probably thousand of "noisy" neighbours. It's better from a long therm projects and better from a specifications point of view.

Most shared hosts can jail host an account so this would help protect vulnerabilities in other accounts. There should be a cost increase going from shared hosting to VPS. If not there are risks with using such a service. I had a client move to VPS from shared, but then moved back to shared as with VPS you have to pay for the resources. With Shared hosting you are literally sharing resources from a professional a pool of users.

As said above ElasticSites hosting has the best of both Shared and VPS.

Managing things easily with cPanel is pro of Shared Hosting, and Guaranteed High Resources why people move to VPS. If you get CloudLinux with CageFS and guaranteed CPU/RAM, it's a VPS alternative with ease of Shared Hosting.

A few benefits of VPS and cons of Shared Hosting:
    - VPS provides dedicated resources while in shared hosting, it will be shared by the websites hosted in the same server.
    - You can schedule maintenance of your VPS as per your convenient time while you can not do this with Shared Hosting.
    - You can upgrade VPS resources anytime you wish while in shared hosting providers may not allow you expand some resources at some extend.
    - You will have full admin/root access of your VPS while this is not possible with Shared Hosting.

A few benefits of Shared Hosting and Cons of VPS:
    - You do not need to worry about the maintenance of the server with Shared Hosting while you are responsible to manage your VPS.
    - You will have ready setup to host your websites in shared hosting while VPS comes with only OS. You will have to setup Hosting environment.

If the VPS is managed there are no disadvantages in comparison with the shared hosting. The price is higher but it is worth the money.

If you have high traffic demands or multiple sites to manage then go for VPS rather than shared hosting. The security of VPS hosting is better than shared hosting.
