Most irritating thing about running an e-commerce store

Discussion in 'eCommerce' started by Indutias, Jul 4, 2016.

Hello. I am looking into starting an e-commerce store and I understand that it would take a lot of hard work.

I am just asking in particular what are the actual mundane/irritating/repetitive tasks that make up the grind of running an e-commerce website.
Also any funny moments, mistakes or shorter stories related to e-commerce would also be appreciated.
    Thanks for the time

Chargebacks for sure even though the customer has received their products.
99.9% of the time paypal protects this shit also and even though you provide adequate shipping information they still rule in favor of the buyer.
    It's absolute garbage.

9/10 they chargeback claiming they never received the product.
You provide shipping details HOWEVER Paypal 99.99% always protects the buyer. So they refund the buyer.

Yes, chargebacks is always a big threat to merchants and minimize their revenue to a large extent. But we can surely prevent chargebacks by employing the appropriate tools and strategy.

Running an online e-commerce store is more riskier than the physical store.

The below are some of the problems I personally heard about:
    1. Re-seller accounts, a third party entry of products may be inequality which decreases the brand value of the business.
    2. Low quality glass products have made the demand dwindle. Even though it is good, it will not be delivered properly due to handling/packing in the delivery.
    3. Cash on delivery becomes thorny for customers when the sales person does not tender cash.
    4. Un time delivery goods.
    5. Big brands offers BIG DAY sale - One to two days to sale with BIG discounts...but 20% of products delivered are inquality
    6. BIG DAY sale receives more traffic, unexpected traffic leads to 500 internal server error to the startup websites which has lesser bandwidth.

The most irritating part is managing different vendors. If you don't have a warehouse then you will deal with product and price change routines. Managing price is the second most irritating factor as you will always find your competitors making the market dirty by lowering prices and taking advantage of economies of scale. The best moment is entire eCommerce life cycle part is when you get your first order.

The most irritating thing depends on the type of e-commerce store you are running.

    Drop Shipping Based Ecommerce
    • Vendor issues - Vendors not having products in stock when their inventory says otherwise. Also, not shipping products out in time.
Non-Drop Shipped Based Ecommerce (stuff you stock yourself)
    • Having a large inventory of products that you have to stock yourself, so the upfront costs are high. Might face cash flow issues.

The most tiresome is keeping stock numbers up-to-date.

Waiting for the first sale. That is usually the first thing that most new sellers worry about.

Milliardo is right. All new e-commerce owners wait for months even for a single sale (I was one of them). It's so important to make a strategy on how to promote products, how to get good photos, price setup based on competitions and how to promote. No promotion, no sales.
As far it concerns chargebacks, if the product is posted with a courier service (DHL, TNT) then the package will be delivered 100% to the customer and so that customer cannot say that he didn't receive it!
Also, if a product is well presented and described and of good quality, then returns are reduced.
The biggest headacke is how to increase sales since running an ecomerse store is really time-consuming when you load products and arrange them in the right categories, changing banners, setting up campaigns (Adwords, Facebook ads etc), checking what competitors do, checking stock and back ordering.
The second biggest headache for fashion stores is to make a good photoshoot without spending more than they make (since money will be spent also in promotion).
