For me this reply is mainly based on volume of traffic and level of engagement.

    1. Facebook
This one work in a gazillion number of niches. Almost any market can find an audience on facebook. Traffic from facebook also respond well on your website once you get them in.

    2. YouTube
This is also quite good and can really send you tons of quality high engaging visitors. YouTube also have a high volume of buyer traffic,

    3. Twitter
I guess not really kicked off on this site but for those who know the trick, it is a great one.

    4. LinkedIn
A very polarised social network and so very limited in the kind of niche you can promote this. However, if you fall in the right niche for LinkedIn, they are will to spend lots of my on your stuffs.

    5. Reddit
Hmmm.... This guys are quite tricky and so what unpredictable when it comes to serious stuffs. The upside is that majar of thr traffic from here are from USA. So if you are targeting that part of the world, it is worth a try

Is this just a list of social media outlets or are they ranked by some sort of metric?

You will loose focus if you decide to face all the social networks for the purpose of sharing your posts, One easy method i use is viralcontentbuzz.com it is more like a share for share website. everybody posts his articles, and then you get free credits by sharing other peoples articles, these credits are what you in turn will use to get shares, so it is a continous cycle.

I specifically share peoples content only on Twitter, but other people share my content on STUMBLEUPON, FACEBOOK, and PINTEREST. so you can see how easy it is for me to get free shares across 4social networks while i share only on one network, that way you reach is vast while you focus on doing other things that will help improve your blog

Facebook is a good way to attract traffic to your website, however they have some very strict guidelines. Like for example if you have a dating website, do not put the word date or dating in your ads, just put friends or friendship and your ad will get approved. Just play their game.

How people skip this is beyond me. Every business is different and has a different audience so this question is not logical in that sense.

Fecebook drives a lot of quality traffic. In particular this refers to targeted advertising in Facebook.

If you can use all, then do so! :D It helps you with off-page SEO. But I would focus more on platforms that drive me more traffic, like Twitter and Instagram.

It definitely depends on what is your website target audience / what content you are bringing or what you are selling.
Considering the layout previews, Facebook (big site preview) and YouTube (annotation, better call-to-action with video) are definitely the best. But the key part is identifying what social media "makes sense" with your website. For example, if you sell or talk about furniture and fashion, Instagram will be very interesting. If you have a blog about news or any type of advice, LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit and Facebook will be more helpful.
Could you give us more information about what your website is about?

For me it's Facebook that drives most traffic to my website so I think Facebook is a must for every businesses. You can also try Instagram if you have tons of products to promote as I heard it also generates good amount of traffic to websites.

If you want to promote your website use social media like: facebook (lot of people have an account there), google+ (is very similar), twitter for sure, instagram. Pinterest and Tumblr for good pictures (just for good pictures), Youtube, LinkedIn.

It all depends on the niche of your website. Supposedly you are into something that requires mass attention and for a product that's for mass, facebook, twitter and instagram is the way to go. But in case consider selling sites and scripts and domains is your niche then they these platforms may not do you any good and you might require forums to help you out for the same so its all about the niche of your site

It would be depend on your followers amount. I have 300k twitter followers, 1k facebook followers, 3k google plus followers so normally I am getting most traffic from twitter.

If you have same amount of follower in each social sites than facebook and twitter would be great.
