Hi there, my name is Mike, and I'm the sole web developer for TikiTour.com. I've also developed a couple of widgets that are being used on other websites. I am receiving feedback from the employer of TikiTour for changes to a modal popup I created using bootbox and bootstrap select boxes. It's purpose is to provide the end-user with a means of entering in room and guest breakdown, for the overall purpose of searching for rooms in an accommodation/hotel. You can see the widget in play here: http://www.crownbeach.com/, under Booking Enquiry. Selecting 'More Options' in the HTML select box brings up the modal popup.

It's been operational for a few months now. I'm getting feedback from the employer that he wishes to change it to look like this ( GuestBreakdown_2.jpg ). I balked at the change, indicating that I did not see this as being an easier way to display/view the input fields, along with conventional HTML select boxes not being as easy to work with. I also did not agree with the popup title change, nor the inclusion of an input field in the heading.

He responded with the second attachment ( GuestBreakdown_2.jpg ), and asked that I change the text in the 'Submit' button from 'Save' to 'Search'. Except that there's no Search taking place, it's 'Saving' the input so that the end-user can 'Search' for room accommodations based on his/her input.

Am I completely off-base here? I've worked as a web developer for close to 20 years now, and although I will admit to not being any type of UI expert, I've worked with enough designers and UX specialists in the past to have gained a grasp of what is acceptable and easy to work with, and what is not.

Can someone/anyone that can title themselves as UI/UX specialists please give me some feedback here? I prefer to stand my ground and back up my opinion, and I also would prefer to get "corrected" by a specialist if my reasons/point-of-view are unfounded.

    Thanks in advance

Hmm, I had my 3rd trip to Raro in October and we've just booked for a group of about 20 for this October. My kids were about 10 and 12 when we had our first trip there. On our last trip we got caught up in all the "excitement", no so much that we got freaked out but we were glad when it was over.

My first thought is "Why do you need to know the age of the kids when I'm searching?"
Those criteria were more than just "Crown don't do under 16s" so I'd want to see evidence of how that info is being used.

From a technical standpoint I really don't like the fact that the page is obscured - I would have thought you could simplify the age ranges and just do what grabaseat.co.nz do

although, being an airline, their ages are different... I just gave them a tweak

even if you're adjusting because of the number of rooms you can still do that nicely on the page without using a popup.

    Hi Sarah,
Thanks very much for the feedback!

Without getting too much into the details, it is important in the accommodation industry, especially in the Pacific Islands where child restrictions are bountiful and the age ranges that are considered an adult are different, that the age of the children are provided. Booking.com is an excellent example of an established website that asks for the children's ages.

The employer's costs are important here, and the design change to display it and allow changes without opening up a modal dialog cannot be made at this time (employer's decision). I am just trying to find expert opinion on the specific requests the employer is making in the above thread, and how I am finding them to be significantly less appealing/ease-of-use and logically accurate.

I like your suggestion on the fake HTML5 number counters. I actually use them in the mobile version of the TikiTour.com accommodation selection. Thanks!
