I suppose, it's not entirely clear to me what that drop down list is for.

Ok we had nearly double the sessions reported yesterday than the average. This is a HUGE problem. This site has some 10,000 sessions per day and is one of our major clients. This is the kind of thing I feared would happen, the numbers changed dramatically on both sites.

Can you please take a look at www.lawnsite.com and www.plowsite.com and let me know if anything stands out that would have caused this? Could it be because of the event reporting in the back end? I turned off the 15 second engagement reporting, so that shouldn't have affected it.

    Thanks.

Meanwhile Page Views look normal, so pages/session plummeted. Is this possibly due to something causing the session to expire earlier than before?

Were you using universal analytics before? Google Analytics measures things very differently depending if you are using universal analytics or not.

Can you post a screenshot of your addon settings?

Yes, we've been using Universal Analytics for well over a year, possibly 2 years.

Is it possible that the events fired off in PHP are also creating tiny, short sessions?

Yep... try disabling attachment views and see how that looks for you. You potentially get get a ton of extra sessions from that since a search engine spider will be "viewing" attachments (unless of course you block them from doing so).

How would we block them from doing so? I've disabled that for now, but it will take a day to see if numbers normalize.

Just depends if you want your attachments spidered really. You could edit your robots.txt file to ask spiders to not spider certain URLs (like attachments). That's up to you though... probably better to just disable the attachment view event unless that's something you are actually interested in within your analytics.

It's all about what the client wants, I have nothing to do with "wanting" any of this. However, I appreciate your advice, I've turned off the event tracking for attachments and the numbers seem to be normalizing now. We might block attachments from being seen by Unregistered/Guests. I think that's a smart move anyway, since it reduces the load on the server, and adds an extra incentive to log in.

    Thanks again!
