Google Updates and Penalty Recovery

Hi,

Our site was pretty severely impacted by Panda and Penguin (and some other updates) so we have been working very hard on improving our site. We removed duplicate content, did a professional redesign to improve quality and UX (our bounce rate is low, pages viewed per session is high, time on site is high and 0-10 second visitors are low(ish).)

We were hoping Penguin 4.0 would help us but it didn't (it didn't hurt us either).

Our competitors have quite a few more backlinks than we do so I've finally convinced my business partner that we need (I think) to acquire some more quality backlinks with a variety of anchor text keywords at a steady velocity before we'll start to really recover our old rankings. We also did a much more intensive back link profile cleaning recently.

Here are the updates that impacted us the most. Are there any specific things we should focus on that these updates were specifically targeting (other than things already mentioned of course like duplicate content, spammy backlinks etc.) that we could focus on? Maybe something we're overlooking or not considering.

As you were penalised, I think google might consider the sudden backlinks as a potential spammy activity, but mainly what is your site about ? and how has it been affected you ?
