PPC is an abreviation for pay per click and means that you pay for every click on your on-line ad.

As others have mentioned, you only have to pay when someone actually clicks on your ad. What this means is, you don't pay for impressions of your ad - so when your ad shows up on various websites, the ad only costs you money if someone actually clicks on it. Pay per click is pretty popular with most online advertising - most notably, of course, is Google AdWords.

PPC means pay per click, you have to pay every time when someone clicks on your link. As you asked about search engine working process, there are three stages
    1. Crawling: means data gathering. The crawler bot scanned every website and make a list of everything on that website.
    2. Indexing: In the second phase the data gathered through crawling has been stored in a big database.
    3. Ranking: This is the last step and that is what you see. When you type a query the search engine brings the most relevant documents from its database which matches your query.

Your website serves the advertisement and the advertiser pays every time someone clicks on the ad and goes to their website. The ad network, like Google, randomly decides how much of a cut they want to give you which is totally unverifiable by you. The real victim is the advertiser of course and the ad network knows that you will keep serving ads and working for them for little scraps. They used to give like 90% to the website but not anymore, 50% or less now according to reports. Frankly I think its way way less, but how would you know?

Pay-per-click (PPC) is a digital marketing strategy where an advertiser pays a fee each time one of its advertisement links is clicked. This fee-per-click is usually delivered to a search engine or other website publisher. The advertiser creates ads and bids on keywords relevant to its business. When users search on those keywords or visit pages with relevant content, the advertiser's ad may appear in sponsored search results or elsewhere on the site. If a user clicks the ad, the advertiser pays the fee to the publisher. This allows advertisers to target prospective customers and pay only for clicks, not impressions. PPC is a helpful way for businesses to get their brand and offerings in front of interested potential customers.
