    First of all, if you want to build backlinks, you should focus on high-quality backlinks. Those are the ones that are both organic (or natural) and that Google will probably consider the most in its rankings.

    You can get natural backlinks by either creating great and helpful content that other people will automatically link back to, or by writing guest posts on other blogs/sites etc., which will then give you a link to your own site.

    Granted, there are faster ways to set up a backlinking strategy (some might call this "black hat SEO), but at the end of the day it is natural and quality backlinks that will boost your SERPs in the long run.

    I think most people covered the majority of the points. I have yet to taste my own medicine but the only guide I believe you really need is: quality over quantity if you're serious. Building backlinks is all fine and dandy but the content should be the primary focus and then other aspects such as backlinks. Building sub-tier backlinks can have negative repercussions so far as I've heard. So just take your time, research your industry and reach out to potential sources, it will probably be slower but a lot more effective.

    I can't believe what I am reading here. Considering that toolbar (the PR we could actually see in the past) page rank is officially dead and cannot be measured whatsoever, I wonder how some of you offer services based on page rank. I would really love to see that.
