    Hello my fellow entrepreneurs!

A couple of years back, when I started in the web development and internet marketing field, I registered my 1st Limited Liability Company (LLC) in Delaware‎, USA. Truthfully, the company name was poorly chosen and I regretted registering it many times over the years. I’m not going to share that name with you because you will mock me for my ridiculously unprofessional choice. In my defense, I was just a novice starting my online business. Whatever little experience I have gained over the past years has taught me that it’s better to ask for expert advice when you need it and there are always plenty of good people eager to help.

So here I am asking for your kind advice..

Well, I’m going to incorporate my 3rd Startup Company here in India. This time I’m really serious and want everything to be proper (if not perfect) from the very beginning. Truthfully, I love dreaming big and working hard in pursuit of that dream like many of you do. I believe it often helps me to achieve more by trying to reach higher than setting a smaller realistic goal. So I have set high goals for this venture too.

Basically, I hope to make this venture into a big media production, publishing and distribution house where we will not only develop and manage lucrative web businesses, but we will also publish books (not only eBooks but actual paper books) and magazines and in the near future we’ll venture into movie productions – from short films for televisions and web to big budget full length feature films. I’m very much aware that it’s not an easy goal to achieve. Here’s a little note to those who always try to discourage anyone who dare to dream big: as a business school graduate I’m already familiar with most of the statistics you may present to discourage or criticize my efforts, so please save your energy. Instead if you could help me with your creativity to select the best suitable name for the company I'll be really grateful.

I have done my research in this regard and liked these 2 names very much, so I’ve already registered this 2 domain names for one of them to become the main company website -

    BigUnity.com

    UnitedZoom.com

To my senses, the first name “Big Unity” not only suitable for any great humanitarian organizations but it could also attach a sense of human greatness to the brand value of a big commercial enterprise.

The second name “United Zoom” - I love it because it easily represents a vibrant media company.

Now I’m unable to decide which name I should incorporate? Also should I register the shortest version of the name like -

    Big Unity Inc.

    Or

    United Zoom Inc.

Or should I add words like “Medias” or “Productions” to the main name to reflect the company objectives more clearly. So the options of registering the names could be -

    Big Unity Inc/LLC/LLP

    Big Unity Medias Inc/LLC/LLP

    Big Unity Productions Inc/LLC/LLP

    United Zoom Inc/LLC/LLP

    United Zoom Medias Inc/LLC/LLP

    United Zoom Productions Inc/LLC/LLP

I love all these above 6 names for the company, so I’m still undecided which name to register.

I’m sure many of you may have faced similar dilemma! Could you please give some valuable advice and suggestions in this regard?

Also you are welcome to suggest a different name if you wish. I’ll be really grateful for all your help in this regard. Thanks

Big Unity is pretty good: rather short and easy to remember.

Starting up and heading a company is about leadership. Here you are on a public forum asking for advice on what to call your company. This denotes indecisiveness on your part and a lack of confidence. Take the helm and guide the ship through the waters yourself. Captain the ship right from the get go or the whole thing will flounder.

Hi Spoiltdiva, thanks for you constructive suggestions. But this is not my indecisiveness, this is kind of a market research – every small, big, fortune 500 companies do that all the time.

Just the other day I was reading a very interesting post by the founder of domain giant GoDaddy, Bob Parsons

Here's what he said about sticking with that (in)famous name!

“Someone said "How about Big Daddy?" A quick check revealed that it was taken. Then I said "How about Go Daddy?" And by golly, the name was available, so we bought it.

When we first bought the Go Daddy name we thought it might be a bit too silly to use for our name. But we told everyone (more as a tease than anything else) that "Go Daddy" was going to be our new name. We continued to look for a better name but found nothing. Meanwhile the staff, and anyone else who heard our funny new name, fell in love with "Go Daddy" and it stuck.

We noticed two things that most always happen when someone hears the name "Go Daddy" for the first time.

1: They smile. We like that.

2: They remember it. We love that.

So we changed the name of the company to Go Daddy Software, Inc.”

In this case also, even if I have strong personal liking for one of the above names but 10 other people suggest another name, most probably I’ll incorporate the other name.

    What about United Media?

This sounds like an all-inclusive platform that makes the audience think there's a lot going on at your website.

Hi WebmasterPhil, thanks for the great suggestion.

I thought of that already, unfortunately the “.com” version of that name is not available so even if I incorporate the name like “United Media Inc.” which is really great as a company name, but for the company website I may have to choose another domain or longer domain, that’s kind of unprofessional, don’t you think.

    United Media Central
    All United Media
    United Media Today
    United Media Now
    United Media Nation
    My United Media

or try another word like Global

    Global Media Central
    Global Media Station

I like Big Unity more but if you could do a keyword search as well and also some Google search make sure there is no unusual or you know bad thing associated with the name. This might sound like a porno production too :)

Hi WebmasterPhil, some of them are really good names for a media company. Although, my main concern is, for any of this names the company website have to be a 3 words domain with around 15 letters and believe me when I say that’s no good sign!

As a general rule, I don’t register domains with more than 2 words anymore. One time I had a domain portfolio of around 500 domains, all niche targeted exact match domains (EMD). I was able to flip many of the 2 word domains, most of the 3 or 4 word domains were unsold so I dropped them. Although that venture almost tripled my investment but it taught me some hard lessons too.

If interested please see the Alexa’s top sites and you’ll see the truth yourself –

Many thanks for your valuable suggestions and creative inputs though.

I agree with that to a certain point...

    historically proven:

    1: should be a dot.com
2: Should be short as possible.
3: Should be easy to remember....

Most important factor of all, know how to effectivey market your niche,
so you can take yourself to the next level, or you will be another flop....

Hi Mehdi.b, thanks for your confirmation, I too like the “Big Unity” and almost decided upon it.

I thoroughly did my research, when searched “unity” or “big unity” Google shows the unity3d website as the first result, which is a very popular Game Engine to develop games.

But you lost me by saying “big unity” can give a sense of porno production!!! “GoDaddy” surely seems naughty to the senses of so many people. In fact, if you go to BigDaddy, which Bob says were there first choice of name, is actually a porn site.

But how could “Big Unity” give the sense of porno productions!!! I’m requesting to some other members to give your valuable opinions and suggestions in this regard. Thanks

What sense does it give them about your niche?
(before they get to the site...)

unity is also associated with gaming...
is your niche going to be in gaming?
visitors may imply that you are....

The reason I said that was to show some extreme measures, this is what I do with my clients as well. To give them a bit of shock and make them think differently in a completely different direction and see stuff they wouldn't see before hand. The name seems to be fine though, and you should also look at the culture you think you want to put into your business by choosing a name. For example Crazy John Mobile is always fun, you never seem them super serious even with customers, that is their culture, but IBM is a serious company with precision. I hope these make sense to you.

This is really a non-topic issue! To be honest!

Or, there are two different discussions at once!
First, the URL. Second the name itself.

You have two URL's that you like. It's good. Then you want to register different names... But really, what different does it make!?

    ***
Think of other brands: Ford, Oldsmobile (and more) = General Motors. Yes, Libro, Axe (and more) = Procter & Gamble.

This means: Then name of the product need not to be the same name on the registered company and the name itself!

It also means, you can write "Big Unity Media" or "Big Media Productions" where applicable! Who's going to stop you!? Your business will not win or loose because of the name! If you have a great product or service you will do good, no matter the name on the actual company! The actual company name need not to be written to the consumer! After all, it's really not so important...!
Building a brand is more than the name!
    Good luck with all!
