Hello, I just want to ask what`s the difference between using htaccess file, mod_rewrite and puting index.html in new folders? The second way really looks very lame, but if it works without page errors and broken links what`s the problem about it? I'm a beginner and I'm trying to avoid learning codes and mod_rewrite magics, but I wonder is it possible..also what is URI and is it related to these things?

To enable multiveiws is so easy why would you not want to do it that way? Unless your server is not using apache and does not have multiveiws option to enable.

To name all your files index.html and put them into folders is so much work and confusing when working with the files locally as they are all named the same.

Doing it with multiveiws via .htaccess file means making or editing 1 file with 1 line of code in (Not that you can call it code), then uploading it to your root, done.

Doing it with mod_rewrite is also a pain to get it working correctly on all URL's.

Make setting in your .htaccess file as per you want to change in your url.

It's good to see how you people still help the guy out who hasn't solved the problem after over 3 years of trying, I guess. I'm sure, 10 years from now, you'll still be trying to help him out.

I replied as somebody else brought the thread back to life responding with an answer which I really dont agree with.

You know aswell as I do that other people will still read threads like this when searching for ways to do it, so although it wont help the OP is could still help many others who are looking for the answer on how to do it.

Dont get why you have to respond to everything the way you do like your better than everybody, yeah the forum is full of spammers and people posting absolutly dumb responces or questions, but yet your still here so it must have some use to you, dont get why you always have to have such an attitude with everyone.

You could just put each page in its own folder. e.g. Put about.html into a folder called about and call it index.html

    Hi,
Sorry for re opening an old thread but i don't like starting new ones,
I built a website a while ago and someone told me it didn't work, but on my computer it did work, i've just been updating it and then when i tried it on Firefox - i realised that it doesn't work.

    Only works on Internet Explorer.

    On firefox
    Home page works:
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk

    But not this link:
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk/vauxhall

However if i upload it as:
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk/vauxhall.htm

    the page works.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a short cut or something to sort this ?

Or is the HTC access complicated to do ?

I am wondering why does it matter if it has htm or not on the end? the fact that you are even talking "htm" means to me that you have larger issues then worrying about the .htm displaying

One thing you can do is put it in the FOLDER vauxhall as index.html and it will work when viewed as www (d0t) carbon-dials (d0t) co.uk/vauxhall/

The answer to this thread was given on the first reply.

dan2013uk yours is a separate question and warrants it's own thread but the answer is the file needs to be in it's own folder. The folder would be called vauxhall and the file would be called index.htm

So structure wise, it would look like:

But it would be still accessible as:

It's just like the main page... index[DOT]htm is the defining page you can access your website as
    or

    Hi,
    Thanks for all the replies,
I made a .htaccess file and that has solved the problem, pages showing up without the .htm on them.

I now have a new problem (rolls eyes)
In firefox - this page works fine....
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk/vauxhall
    But this page doesn't
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk/vastramk4heaterdials
The menu bar seems messed up.
I made this page and deleted everything apart from the menu bar and logo which should work
    http://www.carbon-dials.co.uk/nonukvzafira9805heaterdials3
but menu bar is still messed up.

Does anyone know what could be causing this ?
i know i should probably start a new thread as it's a seperate question but don't really know how to describe it.

Haha. Yes, yes it is. Sorry, I thought it was active, should've checked date. I really think this forum should lock threads after say 6 months of inactivity in the support forums.
