If traffic ever picks up I plan to switch to vbulletin but not about to kick out the $250 for a license with no real traffic yet.

I used phpbb first, but after some research have found that hosts are pulling phpbb due to the number of exploits.

After searching DP a lot of users with hardly any rep say use SMF. I thought SMF looked weak IMO but I may be misjudging it.

    Any input appreciated.

What about MyBB? I thought that was pretty stable.

You could also try Zetaboards and Proboards however, it does seem like you want to self-host.

MyBB is pretty good mate, it is also hosting some of the big forums out there plus has lots of plugins and theme available.
    You can try it.
They have upgraded MyBB to 1.8 versions and mybb 1.8 themes are different.

Every free forum platform is full of bugs and security issues. I will recommend vanilla forums, they are more active on support. But, you wont be able to convert it in vBulletin as I know.

Honestly free/exploit-free are like anodes and cathodes.

They're just opposites. I don't know of any free forum software that is exploit free. If it doesn't have a current exploit, chances are high that it will soon.

In addition, from my experience before professional forum software, free forums tend to struggle with spam/bot-control as well.

When in doubt just check any exploit database and type in the search bar the name of the forum you're looking at using.

    Try Exploit-db

We are talking for a forum sofrware where people are suppose to gather and generate traffic, right ? My point is that the better the forum is the more foes there are working agains just because they can, they want or whatever reasons. Paid is supposed to have better support than free software, thats 99% true :) So i see don't generate too much traffic and you can procees a little more with free platform. For free i would say SMF platform. It's quite professional, easy and fast to set up.
