No one can tell you.. We are NOT google :D // My favorite is .jpg, but from SEO view, pay attention to the NAME, not the extension! :)

I mostly use PNG which is good for color. but jpg or jpeg. is the best for SEO.
but the main thing which we need to focus for images make alt tag for images or nice description.

jpg and jpeg. are the top most priority image formats.
If we are talking regarding good for SEO then you should use your keywords in image file name because when Google crawls it also search for keywords within your file image names.

I think image extensions have nothing to do with SEO. So, every extension is good. The important factor is how you optimize your images like adding alt text, image resizing etc.

To date, I and/or my colleagues have not read any officially published articles or news from Google regarding their preference for certain picture format.
The common image file types are JPEG or JPG, GIF, PNG, and BMP.
Note: *.JPG and *.JPEG stand both for an image format proposed and supported by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. The two terms have the same meaning and are interchangeable. The reason for the different file extensions dates back to the early versions of Windows.

Additionally, here are other useful tips regarding SEO for image.
    • Use the keyword(s) in the file name
    • Create descriptive alt text
    • Use the right anchor text
    • Don’t keyword stuff when filling out things like image alt text.
Your alt text, captions and file names should be short and descriptive, not a long list of keywords. Remember to optimize images for your website visitors. Image SEO is as much about user experience as it is about achieving better search engine rankings.

    One more tip
    • Page loading also matters. Keep in mind, that page speed remains a ranking factor in Google's algorithm. All in all, please remember to monitor your web page loading speed which could also be due to your web hosting package (monitor your website up-time), CMS or coding etc. I am keeping my point here short and hope you value this point as well.
Having said that, I must say purpleorange is smart. He is doing his research by testing the keyword searches. There is no harm of using certain methods such as JPG more, as we believe not everything would be revealed to us regarding google's algorithm.

For SEO, image format means nothing. File name and alt tag text are way more important.
