You can hardly trademark the number 9, I am not a lawyer but I would be amazed if you got in trouble for using a number.

Number 9 might be no problem.
Problem will occur useing same niche and than having a "similar" brand.
Basically, it's all about money. For example take facebook for sueing one company in europe for useing "book" in their word (facebook won).

Do you really think your website would be the only one that has thought of doing that?

There are hundreds of similar sites that have tried to clone 9gag's business model in some way or another.

Whether that be with some similar or spun version of their name like 9troll, 9lol, 9gags whatever.

TBH 9gag is not an authority service like Facebook is. They probably don't have enough money to take you to court and win and make more money doing it like Facebook would or even really give a gag for that matter.

If you want to make money in this game you need to have your own innovation and not just copy the success of others. Come up with a fresh idea and then you don't have to worry about legal battles over the use of the number 9.

I think it is safe to go for it. As long as you are not using their copyright content.

Like i sayd, its about money. 9gag might not even mind, if they will see it. But facebook is just an example when company has stupid amount of money and cares about holding its brand name.

You shouldn't have any issue using the number 9 in your domain name, even if the site is related.

However, you should know that 9gag didn't become popular because of their domain name.

Putting a 9 in yours isn't going to give you any advantage over any of the other thousands of humor websites.

I would be more concerned with posting content than your domain name - people will learn that the more your stuff is shared.

Make sure first that 9troll is available and not taken by any other. if you take that then you will get a lot of competition with 9gag

lol, I've been sued for sites and content that I never took down too. Ultimately I won, but it didn't mean that behind the scenes things weren't going on.
