They are, and easier to make than crepes http://seattlest.com/2007/10/30/for_becca_or_pe.php I use that recipe. But with a tad extra butter.
We call them Yorkshire puddings over here in the UK and bake them in shallow cake tins rather than muffin tins. They are delicious! You can't have a roast dinner without them.
Popovers are fantastic and we have a place here in New England that is famous for them (may have invented them or something.) I need to look into them a bit more and may post them on my foodie thread on DP.
I took a quick look and it sounds like the American version of Yorkshire pudding was created first in Maine and it was called a popover. The famous restaurant to get them is Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park in Maine. I will probably post more info (and pictures) on the thread in my signature about food.
They are delicious. I basically grew up on them. I'm now 30 and sometimes get cravings for them and wind up eating enough to feed a small army. My addiction to butter also doesn't help.
Typically we either make small ones that are plain and go alongside our roast dinner, or we make one big one and fill it with meat, gravy and mashed potatoes You can also use the batter to make Toad in the Hole, which when you cook sausages within the batter at the same time.
Sounds excellent! Would you consider the "big one" to be similar to "steak and ale pie"? (I still laugh at the name change from "steak and kidney pie", these days.) By the way, would love to hear about your local foods on the DP thread in my signature.
Not really, a traditional savoury pie is usually made with pastry and includes a pie lid and base. A Yorkshire pud is a batter and makes a bowl shape. They are both delicious though! The name change is probably because they are two different pies! Steak and ale is steak chunks cooked in ale, while steak and kidney is chunks of steak and chunks of kidney cooked in gravy. Wow, I'm so hungry now!
1 cup oats flour, 1 cup almond flour, 1 cup protein powder, 2 eggs, milk till consistency is right. = BEST. HEALTHIEST. PANCAKE. EVER.!
The last time I was in the UK (about 1.5 years ago), the only item on pub menus that I saw was steak and ale pie. I assumed that it is the replacement for steak and kidney pie perhaps because tastes have changed? Instead of "name change" perhaps I should have said "menu change." Anyway, they are both great dishes.
I eat out at a lot of pubs and restaurants over here and steak and ale pies have been around for a few years now, We still get the good old fashioned steak and kidney but steak and ale is definitely more popular, It's one of my favorites, I find it a bit tastier somehow.
Steak and kidney is definitely more of an acquired taste. Kidney is very rich and if you aren't used to offal, it can be quite overpowering. I never liked kidney or liver when I was younger but love them both now
