Guest post at niche-related sites with high Domain Authority.

You'd be surprised as to how many top blogs in your niche might be interested in guest posts.

Of course, your guest posts must be ACTUALLY USEFUL and shouldn't just spam your target keywords.

Shortcut? Look for your competitors' best content (as judged by social media shares) and make a better version (ie., up to date, more graphics/videos, more list items, etc etc)

Assess Your Current Search Ranking-it’s essential to know your current position in the Google search results.
Track the Right Metrics-It’s important to know how many visitors find your site via Google. It’s a great way to assess its effectiveness.
Do Keyword Research-: To be effective, you need to pinpoint the keywords that your target audience are using to find your site
Go After Your Keywords with Great Content-Optimize for informational keywords and improve your search ranking by writing resourceful and detailed content
Diagnose and Analyze Penalties-examine your site in detail to see if there are any penalties in effect because there is no point in promoting or building links to an unhealthy site.
Build Links the Right Way-You can also use images to build links when you write posts or guest posts
For improving your rankings is important to understand your market, research and identify the long-tail keywords they are searching with and then create in-depth, useful, interesting and actionable content that will meet their needs. Do this consistently for best results.

Google uses over 200 factors to rank your page, I found an article over at backlinko called "google ranking factors" a good read. It breaks all these factors down and gives a better understanding on how Google decides your rank.

This is a question which is very hard to answer very simple. But I can give some simple tips,

    1. Always follow Google Guidelines
    2. Don't Over Optimize
    3. Don't use copy content
    4. Don't Spam your webpage link by posting it in Low Quality Directories, Bookmarking sites, Article Submission sites, Guest Posts sites, Ad submission etc.
    5. Concentrate more on On-Page which is more important initially later onwards spend time for Off-Page
    6. Check all your page's Title, Description and Content Quality(Unique Content, Content relevancy, Keyword density, HTML Content ratio etc)
    7. Don't be over smart in building link since Google can easily find you and penalize your website
    8. Brand Promotion, Business Promotion always matters. But do it in right way.(Social Media Optimization)
    9. Don't waste time by simply creating a blog or website and doing some spammy off-page works
    10. Develop a Mobile friendly website(Responsive Design) which is more important now a days.
11.Patience is very very important. Don't expect Google to push your website at #1 position in SERP within few days or weeks.
    12. There are a lot of useful info available in Google Webmaster Page https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35291 check it out.

Like this there are nearly 200 Ranking Factors there. Kindly check that also while doing SEO.

If you follow these steps, gradually your webpage will rank for your keyword at better position in Google SERP. But reaching #1 position is based on the Keyword Competition also. For high competitive keyword you need to put a lot of efforts and need to wait for a long period for positive response from Google :) ;)

Create unique and relevant content, optimize all of your pages, submit them to Delicious, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Digg, link social network pages to your blog, grow communities there, guest blog, write columns for influential sites from your niche and no matter what, don't be boring.

Page rank is dead now. Google won't updating pagerank since December 2013.

Since Google is no longer doing updates for PageRank (at least not publicly) concentrate on non-PR authority indicators like MOZ's domain authority and page authority, or Majestic SEO's trust flow and citation flow. Improve your site's authority in ways that Google views as natural (like building more direct/non-search engine or link-through traffic, or getting more online citations and mentions of your site's brand name, not just more backlinks).

You need to work on SEO to improve your page rank. You should do social media marketing like posting on FB, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest. etc and do blog posts and guest submissions.

Page Rank is the thing of past and no longer updated by google.. Now days Domain authority and Page Authority is metrics used for measuring quality of the webpage... As many people stated above different methods of building backlinks will result in higher DA/PA... Also focus on On-Page Optimization as its important factor also in improved Authority of site in top 3 search engines.

guest posts are a wrong idea. never do guests posts. Guest posting is clearly seen as a way to manipulate the pagerank and this is penalized. You can post anyway if you don't include links, of course.

With regard to guest posts, they are useful, just don't do them for sites or blogs that leave footprints that show they are using guest posts. Post them to sites that don't give you a byline, that don't openly say "guest posts invited" and so on.

For now, the best thing you can do is to forget about PageRank because it is not anymore relevant.
Then focus on improving your site's optimization. Analyze if it is overall onpage optimize, most especially site's navigation, structure, page loading time, content, meta data etc.

Publish relevant content. Quality content is the number one driver of your search engine rankings and there is no substitute for great content. Use alt tags and have link worthy sites.

Why do you still pay attention to PR? It's not going to update ever (or at least there is no information about this!). Better pay attention to your SERP! ;)
