PR matters...it's just that it's not the only thing that matters.

PR is a metric that novice "seos" get too enthralled in. People act like its the end all be all.

    1. Because when people say PR they usually meant ToolBar PageRank or TBPR - it is too often confused
    2. Actual PR has had a major devaluation since 2004 or so..
    3. TBPR is a snap shot, not live and does not indicate SERP ranking nor traffic though people believe they are one and the same

So in essence, many people would be much better off if they weren't so obessed with it....

It has a value, just not as great as many seem to believe...

    IMHO Condom of course :0)

    Well said.

It is a good estimate of a site's worth but its a pretty superficial if you only use PR.

R U kidding? You haven't looked very hard. ... go do some homework.. that's what we do in SEO --- research..

Come back if you still can't find one.. it really isn't that hard.. R U trying? Or trying to cause trouble M8?? hah ah aha ha.. Seriously

Not to mention.. WTF difference does it make on the competitivenss of a term? It is either a constant.. or it isn't... you don't base SEO strategies from faulty data sources and key performance indicators

    I spoke with quite a few well know SEOs when writing this earlier this year;

    yet....

this site is on the second page of results:

Happens all the time. Try looking a search for HGH (extremely competitive) and you'll see a PR0 site in the top 10 - ahead of many PR6 and PR7 sites.

The head of ASK Search claims google abandoned using PR for SERPS sometime ago - and I am inclined to believe it. Relative links is what you want - forget about PR unless you are selling links.

As Shawn said (not an exact quote) buying PR is for people who like throwing their money away.

Lol, what is this second word doing here? :D

I had to read it five times before I was convinced that the word Condom was there, but maybe I don't get the joke. Even if I don't, it is funny that it is there.

That's probably got a lot to do with the difference between toolbar PR and Google's internal PR. It's the internal PR, that we don't get to see, that matters in the SERPs. So it's hard to say, "PR is really important" or "PR is virtually irrelevant", because the data we need to make that judgement just isn't available. You could go by the link count as a rough estimate. But you can't accurately judge the value of those links, because the PR that you see for each of those is also out of date.

I thought it was a reference to the concept of a link condom, ie not allowing PR to pass. But maybe it's just an attempt at subliminally getting the safe sex message across?

While it is true about toolbar PR being outdated, PR carries little, if any weight imo. Authority sites have lots of backlinks, which gives them high PR, but its the links, not the PR that is making them rank well. You could buy enough links to make a site a PR9, but it won't help you rank any better. If the links are from relevant sites, it can - but its the relevance, not the PR.

I have sites in the same sector that range from PR3 to PR7 and the lower PR sites outrank the PR7 (which is also DMOZ, yahoo listed) even though they target the same keyword. This has been the case through several updates - so it isn't a matter of the toolbar PR being outdated.

I'll bet Google is sitting back laughing at all the webmasters who concentrate on just PR - it keeps them from trying what will really help them rank higher. It used to matter... but as soon as everyone figured it out, google changed their algorithm.

Well said. The links (or sometimes PR) don't help much if they are unrelated links.

PR keeps webmasters obsessed with google. If you ask me its a smart marketing scheme to keep people talking about google, not to mention getting them to download their toolbar. Relevance and the right anchor text is all that should matter.
