    Yes but the price difference is almost 40% for renewals.
    Name.Com has Renewals at $10 while 1and1 has a minimum if $15

    What do people generally think of these .xyz domains? In my mind they are basically useless, I can not see the public taking to them at all.

    Surely it sounds a bit different.
    But, We do have far more weird names than .xyz which sell for $2000 /Year !!
    I feel its nice for educational and personal usage.
