Thanks. Could you tell me a little about each pros/cons any experience with any of them?

I see Multilingual Press has been mentioned 3 times now. Why is that one popular?

    Thanks! :)

I recommend this plugin to most of my clients. Almost my 20+ clients use this plugin for translating website content. Here are some features of Multilingual Press free version.
    With Multilingual Press you can:

    • Set up unlimited site relationships in the site manager.
    • Language Manager with 174 editable languages.
    • View the translations for each post or page underneath the post editor.
    • Show a list of links for all translations on each page in a flexible widget.
    • Translate posts, pages and taxonomy terms like categories or tags.
    • Add translation links to any nav menu.
    • No lock-in: After deactivation, all sites will still work.
For more detail you can go up with this link.

Granted, auto-translation is still sucky (a lot of the time) - best way to provide users with multi-language content is to (*gasp*) write content in different languages (and, of course, link the given language / post with a selector on the page)

Yeah thats very true. Thats why most big sites have a en/us/fr/ etc sub domain completely same site accept for the words in different language. Havent seen it done by linking a post in a different language way before.

Its probably the best way but of course, theres at least 30 countries worth of content to write in 30+ different languages. That just opens another can of worms :p

Think that 3rd party integration and on the fly country detection and translation or some sort of 3rd party translate option on the site might be my best option for now after all.

    Cheers.

Yes, of course, if you have a large amount of languages you need to have translated, that's probably the best option - however, you should expect some weird phrases and wording. I dunno what the site is about, but if you're working on auto-translate, it might be an idea to consider the starting point (I'm assuming English) - use easy sentence-structures, and limit the special / difficult / English-only words. That will help the auto-translate engine translate it into something sounding somewhat correct :D

qTranslate is a settled interpretation plugin and is likewise the most mainstream one accessible free of charge. It is snappy and simple to introduce and utilization.

Is your site's content in English?

Before you go down this slippery path...You might want to test the products and have someone who is a native speaker of the other languages attempt to read your content. I suspect you'll find most of the content is mangled.

I have played with several auto-translation programs while corresponding with foreign friends. All of them give us a lot of "laughing moments" because of horrible grammar, changes in meaning, etc...

I'd suggest keeping it on English and suggesting readers install the Google Translate Extension in Chrome or Firefox if they want to translate your content. You can even provide links to the Extension/Add-on.

I'm in a similar situation with a site.

One option I'm toying with is having human translators crawling the site improving translations - is there are plugin that allow continuous onsite improvements I wonder?

Have you heard or tried Bablic Localization? It's a start up I'm a part of and we just released an update to our Wordpress Translation Plugin which can be found here. I can PROMISE you, it is the easiest/most effective way of translating ANY website, including Wordpress ones.

The cool thing about Bablic is that you don't need to create additional pages, menus and so on. It isn't as complicated and time consuming as using the popular WPML plugin.

Bablic lets you choose from manual or pro human translation. You can then manually edit all elements, through our real-time editor, simply by right-clicking on them. That includes text, images and even css. Once you're happy with the results, just click save and publish, that's all. Nothing is done through the Wordpress admin panel, it doesn't take hours/days to setup like WPML.

It's hard to explain, but give it a try for yourself and let me know what you think, just enter your URL on https://www.bablic.com

We have a free/forever plan (limited features) which is suitable for most Wordpress users.

I'd love to know your thoughts/feedback!

    Thank you

I'd hit like a dozen or more times on this one.

I've NEVER seen an automatic translation that was worth a damn. They all end up being little more than macho business donkey wrestler.

It's one of those things, if you can't actually write for a target language, PLEASE just don't bother. Anyone who 'needs' it translated automatically is probably already using a tool to do it, and are used to it's quirks. It's a complete waste of time and effort to try and use any 'automated' tool to then put it online that way.

Case in point, let's take the above paragraph, and run it through Google translate to Japanese, and then back to English.

    'Nuff said.
