Does google treat most of directories as link farm?

or this will become a trend?

I jumped into directory business a few months ago and promote my directories hard. Is the effort worthy?

    Thanks for any clarification.

Except those big directories like DMOZ and yahoo, directory is only for backlinks, nothing else.

I disagree with you as there are some directories that are browsed by the users

Well I remember when everyone got into link farms and those went the way of the Dodo bird. I believe that we are starting to see this with directories. I would not be supprised if directories are BH with the major search engines within the next 3-12 months. Whenever a linknig strategy becomes prevailent and without a purpose and without content then you have something useless and that is not valuble to a SE.

Yep, the directories who have no more than a few backlinks and a lot of outbound links are link farms. As long as you have 10x the incoming links than the outbound links, you are fine.

I disagree as well -- about half my traffic comes from surfer's search terms and not from websters looking for a linking op.

Directories on some very focused topics or regionals ones still have value.
They are used by surfers interested in these topics and I think links from those directories are still valuable.

Imho, this no longer true for general directories

This is helpful and eases me somehow. I am still serious about directory.
Human edited directory can exclude some spams, so maybe search engine would give them values...

Of course.. if you have a directory that will approve whatever pays them $2 ... then your in trouble.

    Good luck :)

I think if you get one PR5 home page link you will get PR4 too.

I see a big consolidation coming soon for directories. I think a very few will have value as far as SEs are concerned, but the vast majority will not rank at all.

btw...just remembered it was a thread around here..can't find it now. Lately there are a few directory owners that saw a high increasee referers from google....i don't think this means google sees them as threats :)
