You can invest money into getting high quality backlinks or you can start blog commenting to gain some back links manually. Also, you can write articles and submit them to article directories for more backlinks and possible click-throughs. Social media like Facebook and twitter can be a great source of free traffic depending on the niche. The main thing to concentrate on is to find long tail keywords with really low competition and rank those keywords.

    I generate around 6000 visitors a month to my blog just from forums. It's hard work as I'm active on about 11 forums but it works. will soon be 12 once I'm active enough on here

    If you are not getting traffic it means that you need to expose your site more.
    Tell people that such site of yours exist and invite them to take a visit.
    Different social media platforms will do, especially Facebook.

    Create profile in social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, pinterest, Slide share and have regular participation to get the user interaction,
    If you have any video for your site, share it on YouTube and Dailymotion..
    Other than that participate daily in relevant forums and blog.
    Main thing don't bee aggressive, be slow and steady.
