If you just started a new site. Then i recommend you purchasing homepage links becuase your site might get sandboxed becuase who and why someone will give sitewide links to a brand new site?

Too many sitewides should be avoided. Its ok to have a few, but a majorityof your links should be in content or on a single page on another site. Google has become more objectionalbe to sitewide links.

site wides look fake and are an all around bad idea. deep links and homepage links buried in content are what you should strive for.

I totally agree. If you are going to buy links, find related sites and offer to pay for a link (but first ask for a free one - maybe they will just like your site and link to it)

The easest way to know this for sure is to "spy" your competitor and see what he is doing :)

Tell me your major keyword you're going to promote your website for, and I'll show you a kind of magic ;) Really, no BS

Well, if my competitor is doing stupid things - like sitewides - why should I follow suit?

I never buy site-wide links instead, I try to concentrate on finding on topic sites, and try to get a paragraph, or an article with my link back.

I think you are misleading people here. Good SEO does not include sitewides.

Have I told anywhere that you MUST do this? But... good SEOs never say never ;)

Dear kh7, I just wanted to show an example of how you can easily analyze your successful competitor's link building strategy. All I asked for was a keyword :)

I've always been of the mindset that it depends what you're buying the links for.

If you want to boost traffic from a related site, then sitewides are the better deal since many of that site's visitors will likely be landing there on pages other than the homepage, so you get exposure to all of the site's traffic with a sitewide.

If you're only buying the link to gain PR or other SE benefit, then homepage only is probably what you want.

    Just my two-cents worth...

does google look down on directory backlinks? (ie, consider them "link farms")
