How can I find if a word is trademarked/copyrighted?

I have a word which I want to copyright/trademark in my country.
How do I check if its already copyrighted in whatever part of the world?

I know I have to check US patents websites and stuff, but any one stop solution where I can see if it done in any other country apart from my own nation and USA?

There are 100+ nations around the globe and checking out each and every of their links would only waste my time.

Hi I know that http://www.trademarkdirect.co.uk/ has a free checking service for trademarks worldwide. Also in the USA take a look at https://www.sec.gov to find registered companies. Hope this helps.

Hey sorry about that. I thought they offered international services too. I don't know about a one stop shop sort of place to check everything. I don't think this exists. Hope you find what you're looking for.

For the US, you can search on the USPTO's official website, http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4803:mazt15.1.1. There's no place I know of to search all other countries in one place, but if you're US based, I'd be most concerned with the US.

However, be careful -- you actually need to also search for similar words, common spellings of the word, and even words that sound the same.

words and phrases must be trademarked if the company or person can demonstrate that the phrase has acquired a distinctive meaning apart from its original meaning. That secondary meaning must be one that identifies the phrase with a particular good or service.
