Can you own a domain forever?

Is it possible to buy a domain one time and not have it affiliated with any hosting/domain company? Is it possible to permanently own a domain? Just curious.

You can own a domain forever if you continually renew it. Max increments for renewal however, is 10 years. Domains are purchased through registries/registrars...so it will always be hosted/affiliated w/ a company, but it doesn't mean you need to have an active website on it.

note quite the answer you were hoping for, but one solution would be to put "unlimited" funds into your registrar account, and have it set to auto-renew. So long as you have funds, and so long as the registrar stays in business, then that domain could outlive you.

Your domain will always be associated with a domain registrar of sorts.

They're a component of the domain registration fee that you pay when you register/renew your domain.
