In a word, yes. Too many people used them to add keywords which weren't relevant to their sites.

Many people still use them - so do i. Don't go crazy with them, add short and brief description in meta desc and some relevant keywords in keywords tag.

Whether google completely ignores meta keyword i'm not sure, but google does place less weight on meta keyword tag now. There are still few less famous search engines still use it, so many webmasters still add it to their pages.

Google doesn't use it to rank your website anymore,

However, it is still used in displaying your site. When your page comes up on a google search, it shows the description that you provide (otherwise a random text from your page). That description can convince people to view or not view your site.

    Cheers,

..but they sure as heck do not put much weight behind them any more ..buy backlinks if you want to play with that monster.

You are right, they don't completely ignore them but it is very low value.

However, Google is not the whole world. Other Search Engines still value Meta Tags, so even if Google started ignoring it completely, there are still reasons to add Meta tags to the pages...

    Cheers,

It's ok to use meta, it will not bring bad effect to your site although its value is not that high to Search Engines.

Meta tags are used for keyword density, meaning they measure the content in the title, meta tags and body and place weights on the terms.

The importance of Meta Tags now is that there may very well be some keyword density factors, that may still exist, only the Search Engines really know. Use the SEO Conspiracy theory here, that some little value in the tags may help somewhere, somehow and you may benefit by having then then not having them.

The main reason for meta tags is the Meta Description used to define your listing in the SERPs. So you can try and market to visitors the same way you would with a paid ad (PPC).

It should NOT be ignored for this reason. If you can get high CTRs in Adwords, then wouldn't it make sense that you can also get higher CTRs in Natural Search? Although sometimes the Metas shift based on searched terms, it can still help.

--Be Thorough! Be Smart! Market to people on the SERPs.
