Google Bowling

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by panama, Dec 11, 2006.

Does Google bowling really work. All of a sudden my link count in one day on google jumped by about 20,000 for nothing we ever did. I think I am a google bowling victim? Any thoughts? Anything anyone know that can be done. It seems odd that link count only on google would jump so much in one day. How could someone get so many links to show in one day and not on yahoo and masn?

It seems awfully stupid to spend a lot of time doing white hat when anyone can come along and ruin it.

    Help appreciated.

More likely Google will just discount the links as irrelevant. If you have a good number of quality links, poor quality ones will probably not do you any damage.

Strange, never heard of this before. I thought getting relevant sitewide's is what you tried to get, especially for traffic.

Lots of theories as to whether it can really be done. Likely the links are only devalued and it can do you no harm. If Google does track a ratio of poor to good quality links and rates your site accordingly, than raising the number of good quality links to your site will counteract any damage done by the poor.

Google states that compitition can do nothing to harm your site linkwise, they are also well aware of the idea of Google bowling, so I wouldn't be to concerned about it really happening.

Here is a definition of Google Bowling if you are interested Google Bowling

This is also google bombing ;)

Google bowling is when you try to decrease someone's rankings with some spammy techniques and google bombing is when you bomb a site with one particular anchor to rank well for that particular keyword.

Rand Fishkin from SEOMoz wrote in one of his blog posts that Google Bowling is real... But I have never seen any example of this yet (though if anyone could show me an example, I'd be VERY happy)

If it's real that would sure blow away Google's statement that a competitor could not do anything to lower someone elses site in the serps!

Be tough to do with a well established site though. Too many good links to counteract the bad. I've never heard of anyone being able to prove that it has happened and I"m sure it would be in every forum if someone could.
