Having no Meta Description

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by andrej, Jun 17, 2014.

I wonder if it can harm my website if I don't have any Meta Description on it? Google just picks some text from my website and displays that in the search results.

I know there is no longer need to have the Meta Keywords, but what about the Meta Description?

    Hey Andre,

It doesn't hurt you if you're missing the Meta Description, but you're missing an opportunity for it to help you.

The key places for your keywords are:

    1) URL
    2) Title
    3) Description

Not having the Description, is just a missed opportunity to sneak in some of those long tail terms or synonyms. But, its not going to hurt you if you leave it out.

    Hope this helps,
    Diggity

    Hi Andrej,

If you do not give meta description in your website's meta tag field, it is website optimization error. Google finds the keyword in meta description after checking the meta title. When it does not find from here, then it collects some content from your webpage and show that in the search result.

But important question is that, why visitors choose your website? How will they know about your website's business?
Using meta description you can express your website details within few words to the online visitors.

    Thanks,

Meta description tag is the second major on-page factor in SEO. A good meta description tag recommends the viewer to click through to your site.

No meta description will not harm your website and it is said by google in September of 2009. Google uses meta descriptions to match meta tag content for return results when searchers will use advanced searching operators, as well as to pull preview snippets on search result pages. it do not influence the ranking factor. But you should use meta description for your own sake. See this article http://blog.kissmetrics.com/meta-description-magic/ to see why you should use meta description. Do not duplicate your meta description, it will harm your site.

don't panic first of all this is google search feature. Google pics text according to the user search queries. where he thinks that keywords are coming anywhere in your webpage they shows in SERPs.
This is really a wonderful thing suppose if you are not targeting that keywords in meta description but that is in your web content google will pick from your heading tags & page content.

& your next que what about meta description. leave this also on google. Google algorithm is very smart they shows this thing according to the user search query.

    All the best bro :)

    It will not
It will not harm your website but you might loose some ranking in search engine because meta has also great importance in search engine.

If we are talking about the effect of meta description tag related to site ranking, then it is now very clear that, it doesn’t help the site in ranking well in SERP. But, we should not ignore the importance of it. It is shown below the url of your site when you are searching your site related to targeted keyword on search engine result page. It is like a short summery about that web page.

Adding to this, no two web pages of a site should have a same meta description tag.

Meta description tags, while not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. These short paragraphs are a webmaster’s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to let them know exactly whether the given page contains the information they're looking for.The meta description should employ the keywords intelligently, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click.

You do need to have keyword targeted meta description for your site. Though there is no harm in not having it, but adding one can help you improve your rankings. It is always advisable to add a good unique meta description for all your pages.

If your website doesn't have meta tags it won't affect your your Google SERP. But Bing and some other major search engines considering meta tag is also one of the SERP ranking factor. Your targeting international audience and yahoo , bing also ASAP try to place meta tags in your website. If your targeting only google you no need to worry about meta tags. Even meta tag will help us increase CTR (Click Through Rate).

Hope this will be helpful for you:)

Still using meta description and keywords because I personally think it's a bad thing to only focus on Google, there are more Search Engines with different algorithms that will use meta tags as a decent SERP factor.

it is just a matter of click through rate
if you have some description that is better than google picked for you, then you are missing more clicks and higher rankings

If you think you have enough content that best describe your site then it is okay to not have meta description because google will somehow be able to pull information to display on the SERP.

Meta descriptions are so vital that many people hire an external company that specialize in meta tag descriptions and title. I would say spend the time to work on it if you have any spare hours in the day. If not, consider hiring an internet marketing company.
