No they didn't - they said they would begin to take it into account for ranking - count it as part of the overall ranking criteria. There is no mention or indication of excluding non-https sites or of giving rank only to https sites.

Besides, there will be lots of situations where https simply isn't suitable or desirable so there's no need to whip up a storm about it. It will likely be benificial to switch if your site can be served over https, but it's not going to be the end of the world if it cannot.

You don't know that Google has started using the https signal for the entire SERPs. That blog post link in OP might simply be a heads up...

This is actually kind of funny Google is leaning towards https.

Really it's mostly large sites that use https over their entire domain, now Google gave a heads up that https will be a ranking signal. Even If it's a weak signal, it's still a signal.

The funny part is small site webmasters complain about big sites having an advantage in Google SERPs yet the small site webmasters don't do what the big sites do (by choice).

So everyone should just blindly move their sites to https because Google is going to use it as part of their ranking signal and that's what the "big" sites are doing?

If Google said it would add rank for any site with a pink background colour and yellow text would you rush off and change the layout of all your sites? Would a pink background with yellow text be appropriate, useful or even look good on every single one of your sites?

I guess they're looking at how it costs next to nothing to throw up a website and Google are looking at other means of telling if a webmaster is serious about their site.

I've got quotes for two of my clients today and the prices varies significantly - and on shared hosting you have fewer options as shopping around also involves a site move. One quote was NZ$100, the other was $NZ600 - thats a hell of a difference.

It might be....OR as Google is on the doorway of becoming a domain registrar and those domains will likely include an SSL encryption service. Convenient coincidence of events? We'll see ;)

They don't "only" like HTTPS websites but since it's a factor in the SE algorithm it is still important. It can make the small differents in getting a rank higher in SERP.
