Facebook! Where do I begin?

    Dear Fellow Digital Forum Members,

I have had a Facebook account for some time now.
But, I am not sure how to use it.

I know. I know. Why do I not read the instructions
    or guidelines? ;-)

    Fair enough. :)

But if the stories I have been hearing are true, then
I am going to need more... much more insiders'
information to get this right the first time, and not
get banned even before I begin my Facebook
    adventure/career.

So, where do/should I start? And will I get a "new"
Facebook account if I were to mess up on the
first one? Is Facebook membership truly beneficial?

And, are those really dumb questions or what? :)

    Okay.

    Help me out, please.

    I value your response.

Let's start from the start. What do you want to do with your Facebook account - advertise a business, network with business contacts or enhance your social life?

The first step, as with most of life, is to decide what you want with it and then tailor your approach.

    Hi MoneyWrite,

    Very good questions. Solid admonition.
And thanks a million for taking the time to respond.
    I really do appreciate that.

    Now, to answer your questions...

If I were to tell you right now that I thought that
Facebook was one and the same in all those areas,
you probably would laugh me to scorn, and I would
    deserve that :)

So, let me see, Facebook can be used for: advertising a
business, networking with business contacts or enhancing
    my social life.

They all see very important, indeed. So I will take your
suggestion, "...is to decide what you want with it and
then tailor your approach," ...and try to figure out what
I really do want to do with Facebook.

Good. Now I have something worthwhile to think about.

Once again, thanks a whole million, MoneyWrite.

    Cheers.

    Alodie

There's Facebook page where it's all about you. Then there's a Facebook Fan Pan you can create for a business, app, or whatever - even start a fan club. Just understand that there is a difference between how Facebook sets up pages and fan pages.

    Hi Charli,

    Thanks a whole million.

You see what I mean about not quite knowing where to start?

I cannot recall having read any where at all, that there is a
difference between "Facebook sets up pages and fan pages."

I have been trying to read up on all I can about this
phenomenon. But, there seem to be so much more to it
than I had at first anticipated.

But, I will get! I just need to learn from all of you guys,
the information and experiences that you all have,
    collectively.

The thing is, I have dismissed this Facebook/Web 2.0 venture
(as a viable business machine) for so long, it is hard trying to
    catch up now. :)

Everywhere one goes on the internet these days to try to
conduct any form of online business, one is being asked
for some form of "social proof." WOW! What do you know? :)

So, I suppose that I cannot put this off any longer. Learning
how to it, safely, has become imperative; a necessity.

But I sure do understand the rationale behind those requests.
It makes a lot of sense after all.

Once again, thank you ever so much, Charli,.

    Grateful.

First thing is most likely clear, you have set up a Facebook page. Most likely with your own name. From there you can create a Fan Page. If I understood what you 'need' I can then help you. I was a social media manager for two FB accounts, two Twitter accounts, and one Pinterest account.

What do you need FB to do for you? Do you have a website? A product to sale? A service?

Those questions must be answered so the rest can fall in line.

You're going to need a personal account even if you want to use it for business purposes. So just create an account and go from there.

You need a personal account, for both personal and business purpose. If you want to promote your business there, be friends with someone that can be your client in the future. It would be more easier for you to get likes for Fan Page with the right target.
Maybe right now, you have no idea of promote your business in Facebook but you will see how potential it is soon.
I think you should try using it. Connect with your friends first, you will know how to use it properly soon.
