The biggest factor in creating a successful forum, IMO, is speedy replies. If a poster doesn't get a quick reply, they tend to go elsewhere.

More tips for a successful forum.

 

I like the forums where the owner is around and present on the boards. It really bugs me where some will just set it up, and then run a big comp to boost numbers. I think that it needs to be of a topic that the owner know things about - or at least is curious about the information - not just around to make money...

 

There is no one factor that will spring your forum to life, rather a combination of factors, and even luck.

You have a lot of competition in the field you've chosen, so being unique is always going to get you noticed, no matter how small your community is.

However that said, I also believe a warm, friendly community, with an active and approachable administrator is absolutely paramount, and crucial to the image portrayed to your target market.

It's best to establish a small member base either by paid posting or by registering accounts and posting from them, before attempting any advertising. And the simple reason behind that is, users are reluctant to join an inactive or dead community, from my experience.

Agreed whole-heartedly. You are getting into a very competitive industry, so you're really going to have to work hard to stand above the rest. Word of mouth can be your most powerful tool. You need to be very nice to your members, respect them, and do whatever you can to make their stay more enjoyable.

Don't let any threads go unnoticed...if you can convince your members that any question that they ask in your forums will be answered, they will stick around. This is something that is very hard for a large webmaster forum to accomplish, so it's an upper-hand that you should definitely take advantage of.

THIS is a key factor... Your going to be a little fish in a BIG pond. You have to have a point of difference. Why should I go to your site instead of DP or John's?

 

Besides DP, which other webmaster forums you often go?

 

Politics and friendliness is a key factor, but none of that will mater unless you have quality content that guest will be interested in. Then keeping them around is another task all together.
Just try to visit all the other sites relating to yours and help ppl out on those sites as well as your own.

You need to take on a particular niche aswell. You look at all the biggest webmaster forums and they are generally focused towards a topic. DP here is Marketing, Namepros for domain names and so on. Perhaps even target your local audience (country) to begin with, i'm working on a forum targetted at Australians and it's working out great.

 

You need a unique layout, a well modded script and a lot of interesting articles and topics. It's hard to get off ground, but you might have some good results over the time

speed is everything i would say, a user comes in forums either to get replies for his issues, or to get new business contacts, as long as he gets them quick he will be willing to stay at the forum

Well, i started a webmaster forum not long ago... (link in sig...) I find the best idea once you have a couple of members is to post as much as possible... I went on holidays for a week and came back to see almost no new posts. When i am active i can see up to 50 or 60 /day...

yup...in starting alot activeness is reqired with no holidays

 

And more proof... My forum had to be restarted the other day, and in the last 3 or so days i have had almost another 30 members and 550 posts... Not bad in my oponion...
