    Well it depends on the type of backlink. And you shouldn't be doing too much of any back-link building tactic.

    For example, heavy do-follow comments can hurt your blog.

    Good quality backlink is a type of backlink that does not come from a public property web 2.0 kind of site.

    E.g. everybody can place backlinks on tumblr blog because it is a property open to public.

    These links don't carry as much weight these days as they used to.
    Same goes for forums or bookmarking sites.

    Good quality backlink should come from a property not open for public- private blog or your own blog network.

    These sites should also have good stats in MOZ and Majestic.

    If you want to learn more about private blogs and good quality links, please watch this video.

    And forget about hitting your site with links using tools like Senuke or Gsa.
    These methods are good only for videos or tier 2 links.

    Very well said Mahe, :D. Though I slightly disagree on the web 2.0 part. I do believe they still have the same value as before as long as they carry high quality content with them. Though these days, I rarely see HQ web 2.0's most of which are done solely for SEO which are keyword stuffed.

    Think you have a blog site named health. And your website only health related then you have to find out health related blog sites for back link. Those back links are helpful for your blog site.

    1. Link form Relevant website.
    2. Website must be indexed by Google.
    3. With a long description/comments, not look like "Nice blog click here to read more" "Good article, thank you admin" etc.
    4. Anchorite link.

    You want backlinks from relevant sites with strong backlink profiles of their own. One powerful backlink can rank you faster than 1,000 spammy ones (but those can still work using tools)

    Pretty much everything is a good backlinks except for you know...spam. But any sort of link that comes from a legitimate site is a good link. As long as you don't overuse it, don't use it the wrong way, don't put crap in it and so on and so forth. You'll be fine.

    You need to have backlinks from relevant websites with relevant/useful description to your websites, a good backlink can work great rather than many others normal or bad quality ones.

    I suggest that you build a strong relationship and reputation on blog communities that is relevant to your niche, instead of building backlinks to your site. It make take lot of time and effort but believe me it will benefit you and your site for long term.
