I'm guessing you never even heard of the hidden web prior to the Silk Road bust, because your generalization is off base. Think about it, another interenet 5x the size of the one we are on now, and you think it's all about drugs and porn? Venture out a little. You may be surprised. Aside from that, have you looked at your avatar lately? :)

Couple days ago my buddy bought a hot-dog and payed with a credit card for it. In just twenty minutes darn google adsense showed him hot-dog advertisement at some site he likes watching. The guy's got so pissed off that he deleted all his Google accounts.
Morale: when a search engine starts to collect data on your digestion habits it's time to start asking paranoid questions.
Though, it might be too late for us :)

I believe they'll soon know more about our buying, eating, travelling, and sexual habits much more than we do

On the other hand, why it bothered him in the first place? I mean all Google did was showing some ads. It's not like it "cleaned" your buddy's visa out of cash... :)

Oh, but I have! Sorry to burst your little secret club bubble, but your "hidden web" has never been exactly a secret, nor does accessing it require any special leet skills.

Just because something is bigger doesn't make it better.

    Your point being?

it's not just ads -- it's knowing really a lot. Much more than the guy wanted a Search Engine in US to know.
I don't think diving deep into such a paranoia is ok, but that gives food for meditation: if they know so much about us today, what will they know tomorrow? And how are they gonna use this power? Do you really think that the guys who own Google are goody-doody philantropists? Or even if they are, will all those US FBI guys let them go on with such a mood. i allude to Wikileaks on Google...

Well, as long as he doesn't plan something dangerous FBI guys woun't touch him.;)

On the other hand, what you told is surely not pleasant. America is pretty big continet, I mean not as big as Russia, but still it is amazing how a private firm can gather so much information about large quantity of people. I surely don't remeber situations similar to your friend's back in Russia.

Big organisations are always subject to conspiracy theories I try to ignore them as most aren't worth wasting time on.

@lightlysalted , come on, conspiracies are so much fun, until u begin to take them seriously:), as R.Wilson once said.
    Then they become real fun.
@MaxCovat , I'm not sure about situation in Russia, but rumors tell local KGB often steals Internet users' private data and uses against them even if they plan nothing bad. i know a guy in California who had to run away from Russia with his family, cause some tough KGB colonel decided to take his business and used every possible means for it. The guy told me, KGB had known all major life events about him. They'd get from all sources, -- his phone talks, his internet payments to online stores, even his social network "friends only content".

I'm sure FBI guys here in the States are more advanced than their Russian coleagues

The FBI are nothing to worry about, no more than your local PD anyway. The CIA are the ones that step all over your rights. Their charter says they are not suppose to operate on American soil, but that has been proven to be BS time after time.

Oh, look, a multi-quoter. Do you feel better now? Anyway, I see that you are an SEO, which means your viability depends on search engines, which means any opinion you have on the subject is biased. Based on your traffic profile, I'd say you should spend more time doing seo on your seo blog than to waste time here arguing with me about how your internet is better than someone else's.

Yeah, I do. I always get this fuzzy feeling inside me when I cut posts into sections to make some sense to which part of I'm referring to. It helps me to get through my miserable days filled with sunlight and bitches.

Gotcha. I don't really see the train of thought there, but with you I kinda lost it long way ago anyhow so no damage done I guess.

And oh, that blog is just a filler I do every now and then without even trying to rank it, my real money rakes in from adult business as we speak, thank you for worrying.

Brandy gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling, but to each his own, or whatever. Getting the thread back on track.

    Google related conspiracy theory -

Sometimes when I do a search on youtube, there will be a slight delay in loading for the two ads that appear above the search results. It is timed so that the ads usually appear just as I am trying to click on the first result, meaning I end up clicking the ad unintentionally. My internet connection is pretty fast, so that shouldn't be the issue. Could this be intentionally done by design in order to inflate ad revenue?
