    I would add, SEO is increasingly more about topical relevance. Hummingbird took a firm step in this direction, and recently Matt Cutts announced that backlinks will matter less and less over time.

    Well, what I meant to convey is that, after a while, the keywords in your content will matter more than the backlinks. The focus is definitely moving toward keyword relevance / semantics. So, your best bet is to create great content with relevant keywords.

    If Matt Cutts said backlinks will matter less, that means build even more backlinks. Lol!

    I do believe social is becoming more and more a factor though.
