Hey dp was just curious to know how much Competition exactly is to much for example with a high competition keyword in adwords just says low, high, medium competition but I was just curious to know how much is to much and how exactly can i research more into the keywords to find out how much competition it actually has? not based on adwords point of view alone?

You're off to the right start by not looking at Adwords competition level to gauge ranking ability. Here's exactly what I do.

    1. Install Mozbar for Google Chrome
    2. For each keyword
      1. Search each keyword and look at the top 5 rankings
      2. What you want to look out for is high DA domains (80+). These are going to be your authority sites that are going to be very difficult to overcome. If the top 10 are completely populated with high DA domains, its probably not worth the resources to go after. It doesn't mean your site is worth giving up. There's always some keyword variation that yields a high amount of searches but has less competition.
      3. Also look out for a high amount of backlinks. If you see sites with lowish DA (20-40), then these are sites that will be in your competition range. Look at the number of links they have, which will give you an idea of how many links you'll need to reach that level. I try not to compete with keywords that have over 100 links.
      4. Caveats and exceptions to these rules
        1. If theres someone doing SEO in the top 10, I go for it right away. With the techniques I use, I can blow any amateur SEO out of the water (namely high PR/PA/DA backlinks from relevant sites). SEO sites are easy to spot. Look for exact match in the URL or affiliate links on site.
        2. If people don't have the exact match in the Title or URL. A lot of times, people will be ranking because the synonyms are in their Title and URL. Let's use 'dog training' as a hypothetical example. If the top 10 spots had a bunch of folks with 'canine obedience', then you'll have an easier time since you'll have the exact match in your Title and URL.
    Hope this helps.

As above, don't pay any attention to the amount of results returned.

Simply look at the top 3-5 sites and see how well optimized they are and think about whether the amount of work it will take you to outrank them will be worth it based on what $ value that keyword has to you.

If you want to know the answer, maybe you could do by means of a survey directly through google adwords.

Too much competition varies from site to site and from person to person. If you can't rank for a single keyword for instance, try ranking for a long tail keyword (multiple word keywords). There is often less competition for long tail keywords.

I'd hate to give bad advice here, but you'll never know if you don't try. I wouldn't let competition discourage you all the time. Nothing would progress in life and there would be crazy monopolies if people didn't try to go up against competition every once in a while.
