I would suggest you to select some highly searchable keywords for your website after that go with on page optimization. After on page go with off page activities like directory submission, social bookmarking, article posting, blog commenting, business listing etc.

 

PPC is the easiest way to get instant traffic otherwise cheap and best is SEO but it takes time.

 

I usually promote my website's brand on social media websites before I do main SEO on it...

I am totaly agree with you, it takes time, for me Guest blogging on high PR blog like labnol also creates a good boost to pagerank as well as traffic..

 

Asking People on a forum isn't going to help you that much. But i would advise that you research on SEO and SMM and try to implement those 2 techniques on your website.
SEO is Search Engine Optimization and SMM is Social Media Marketing.
There are rules to do SEO, which are called white hat and black hat SEO. Use the White Hat SEO rules and you would do fine. But if you use Black Hat SEO then that means you are spamming and google would block your website, (which you don't want)
And in SMM you need to look at all the rules and regulations of all the social media sites and use their way of marketing your website and ask users to view your website.

Do proper social media marketing. You will get huge amount of traffic on your website.

 

Get on to twitter too. And engage your audience. Follow up on comments - these have to be relevant. Submit comments on other articles that are in your niche.

 

You can cut down the amount of time it takes for SEO to go into effect by focusing on long tail keywords. It's working wonders for me right now.

 

for new website - you do SMO and Forum discussion sure you will increase more traffic. i only suggest you, if you like more traffic you do these work and see it's effects
