Top SEO Mistakes

So I decided to do a little reading on SEO, and found a great article, that I will summarize below. You can read the entire article at http://www.quicksprout.com/2013/01/17/5-seo-mistakes-that-even-experts-miss/

    However, in short...

Mistake #1: Building rich anchor text links
A test on the site Doctor650 was done where it had backlinks linking to it with the following anchor text.
    1. Here
    2. Doctor 650
    3. My site
    4. Dissecting The 650 Credit Score
    5. Here
    6. Doctor650.com
    7. Here
    8. http://www.doctor650.com/ (no-followed link from YouTube)
    9. Resource on 650 credit scores
    10. Doctor650.com
    11. Clicking here
    12. Doctor650.com
    13. 650 credit score
Within 54 days of the site launching, it started to rank in the top four for the keyword “650 credit score”. But if you look at the anchor text, it kind of makes sense why Google would decide to rank it highly for the “650 credit score.”

Also, a rule of thumb is to make sure that no anchor text has a concentration greater than 30% out of all your backlinks. Variety is the key to success!

Mistake #2: Building too many links too fast
Google has been around for years now. They have a pretty good idea of how fast a quality site builds links. If you build links too fast, your site may increase in rankings fast, however, you will get penalized heavily by Google when they drop your site a few days after it ranks.

Mistake #3: Building too many links to your homepage
Major sites such as Wikipedia, Facebook, Youtube only have a small percentage of their links going towards their main page. You want to spread out your links throughout the pages of your website.

Mistake #4: Writing a lot of mediocre content
Google can tell if content is crappy. If you're able to write quantitative & qualitative content, that will put you ahead of sites with short crappy articles.

    Mistake #5: Links build authority
Authoritative sites will rank higher and your authority can be gained by
    • Getting links from social media
    • Because of Google +, Google can now verify writers. If you get a verified writer that is known to write quality content, this will help your authority.
    • Aged domains have more authority. You can older domains, or websites via Flippa, or domains via Godaddy auctions.
